Aw thanks Sonia, you're too kind! To answer your question, yes always recorded the drums in a studio - that particular song was recorded live at radio 1's Abbey Road studio in 1987 along with 3 others (also on youtube). It would be difficult to get a good recorded drum sound at home. Even people who have their own home studio will often go to a pro studio to record the drums and do the rest at home.

That is some serious drumming indeed, Nightfly. Well done - even if almost 20 years ago.

What you said in terms of recording makes perfect sense, somehow drums have like a billion mics to enable to record best all drum sounds, close, far away above and etc etc. nightmare really, this is why I am amazed at that live show you did and God it is so good! Brilliant! What have you been doing lately? Other projects etc? Oh pls share more? Big hug to you xxxxx

^ Thanks again Sonia. Another factor that makes a big difference to the drum sound besides the way you mic it up is the general ambience of the room. The perfect example of that is John Bonham's drum sound on When The Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin, which the story goes was recorded by a single mic hanging from the ceiling in the main hall at Headley grange.
If you type in Fast Kutz on Youtube it'll bring up quite a few more videos and songs including some clips someone has put up from last years Brofest which we headlined on the Saturday night - first gig that band had done for 26 years....lol. Sound quality's not great though as it looks like it's Iphone recorded. Thanks again for your interest

Have to agree that the Collins/Thompson duo is a perfect match of gifted stickmen. Their combined work on the "In the Cage" medley off Three Sides Live still gives me chills.

I meant almost 30, indeed. Keep making that mistake of being stuck in the previous decade

Another example are the drums on Deep Purple's album Machine Head (recorded in the Grand Hotel mentioned in Smoke on the Water): the best sound was in a narrow hallway of the hotel.

^ Yes, I'm not surprised at that - a big open space is going to give lot's of natural reverb, especially when it's not a studio environment.

Since I first heard Bruford only four other drummers have ever "wowed" me:
Steve Gadd (so incredibly smooth, effortless), Zakir Hussein (Mind-numbing polyrhythms--sometimes with multiple fingers holding different, separate rhythms!), Trilock Gurtu (East-meets-West genius), Ricard "Huxflux" Nettermalm (Paatos), Martin Axenroth (Opeth) If I knew how to add YouTube videos I would. Many great drummers mentioned.....I have never heard any bad licks from Cozy Powell or Terry Bozzio no matter who they played with over the years.

Carmen Appice. Vanilla Fudge is a guilty pleasure of mine.
Tim steals the show imo, but the drum fills are well executed, even while playing like a wild man.

Angelo, you are very naughty, David Bowie is the sexiest man alive and age does not matter infact makes HIM more experienced and interesting Ok now you best go record an album and release it before you get to Bowie's age hihihihi That is me being snotty lol pay no attention to what I said, I am still p**sed off at Iman tho' for stealing Bowie from me. Bah who does she think she is, only because she is hot and legs that go for miles long umhpf that's obnoxious this said, they have been happily married since forever btw so long I stopped counting lol P.S. Dit is voor jou, Angelo "Jij bent groot, ik ben klein, da's niet eerlijk " hugs! Edited by Kati - June 07 2015 at 05:23 |

Haha, I'm recording right now, as a matter of fact (no kidding). As for Bowie and Iman - she had longer legs than you, so she got there first to you, Katimero (As in Calimero) Edited by Angelo - June 07 2015 at 05:41 |
