Topic: The Big Three Posted: April 28 2015 at 15:38 |
Most would agree that this is the big three.
But which is the best one?
I will start the ball rolling by voting for Genesis (though, like everyone else - I suspect, I love the other two bands dearly).

PF gets my vote. I really like Yes though, and there are only a handful of songs I like from Genesis.

Big three what? Album sales? Most commercially successful non-prog albums? Personal preference?

Big three what? I certainly wouldn't put PF above either King Crimson or ELP if it's the Big Three Progressive Originals. But for this list I'd put Yes at the top.

Yes. They are the greatest. The way I usually put it are the big four, being these three and King Crimson. I also sometimes have a minor big four catagory under these four, being ELP, Jethro Tull, Rush, and The Moody Blues AND under these four are Frank Zappa, Camel, Gentle Giant, and VDGG. Newer prog is its own catagory.

Not easy from this group, but for me Floyd. If King Crimson were included as big four, it would easily get my vote over the other three.

Yes has the brightest moments for me, but PF has such a volume of strong material. So, PF wins in the end.

1 Genesis 2 Floyd 3 Yes
These are the big three beyond a doubt, though you could make a case for adding Tull as a 4th. They have an appeal way beyond the prog fraternity, which bands like KC simply don't.

From this list
1.- Genesis 2.- Pink Floyd 3.- Yes
If ELP was in the list
1.- Genesis 2.- Pink Floyd 3.- ELP 4.- Yes
If Jethro was 1.- Genesis 2.- Pink Floyd 3.- Jethro Tull 4.- ELP 5.- Yes
If King Crimson was here
1.- Genesis 2.- Pink Floyd 3.- Jethro Tull 4.- ELP 5.- Yes 6.- King Crimson
This are the usually considered big 6
BUT
Of course that there are many bands that I would put right after Genesis, like Kansas, Anglagard, Steve Hackett, Magma, PFM, Banco, etc
There are even more I would place after Pink Floyd, like Triumvirat, Rick Wakeman, Focus, Par Lindh Project
Like 10 I would place before ELP
Like 20 more I would place before Yes
Like 100 I would place before King Crimson.
But that's my taste.

Yes. I love Genesis (up to a point), but Yes simply took it further. They're not progressive rock's posterboys for nothing.
