 Topic: Is Camel a metal band?

I went to the local metal music shop here in Vancouver and saw much of what one would expect; everything from old school Iron maiden, Black Sabbath, Burzum, Cinderella and pretty much all metal subgenres including a lot of prog metal. I picked up TesseracT's Altered State, Pain of Salvation's Linoleum, and Riverside's Rapid Eye Movement. The store manager was playing something from Kamelot, I'm not sure which recording, that sounded pretty good as well.
The strange part of this store was the presence of nonmetal prog, some hidden, some not. The Jethro Tull Box set placed in a high visibility spot and bands such as Marillion, Transatlantic and Camel mixed in with the metal, nevermind the advertisement for the Magma show last month. I'm not complaining, as there are few independent music stores that sell CDs I like, but kind of odd!

Years ago, at the Virgin Megastore in Paris, I found both Transatlantic and Spock's Beard in the Metal section, so I wouldn't be too surprised if also Camel found their way there  ...

Ha ha. So I'm not alone. I forgot that I also saw Spock's Beard in there. This is an independent store though, so I can only assume the inclusion was intentional rather than ignorance, which I can see more likely in a megastore.

It hasn't changed. I still find my prog in Paris in Death Metal boxes.

If it's not jazz, classical, or pop hits, it's metal. Too many categories can be oh so confusing.

We have a local chain down here in Australia called JB Hifi, and although their prog pickings are few and far between, TWICE I've come across Renaissance under heavy metal!  Mind you, I've also found Magenta, Kaipa and Mostly Autumn there as well!  The `Metal' section is really just a dumping ground for prog artists that don't include the big bands like Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, etc, which are always under `Popular' One good thing that comes from this - generally all these prog albums sit untouched for months in the metal section, Joe Average has no idea what the albums are, so eventually they're marked down to a fraction of their original price, and I'm more than happy to snap them up, either for my own collection, or to pass on as gifts to friends.

I've seen Pink Floyd at the metal store near me, but other then that the rest is all hard rock or obviously metal. Some would argue that King Crimson shouldn't be in there, because I've seen that, but King Crimson certainly had their heavier albums that lean towards hard rock.

My record store has a pretty large prog/krautrock section. Curiously they put Yes, ELP, pink floyd, Mike oldfield and a few other big name bands in the 'classic rock' section, but Genesis and Camel still get to sit in the prog section.  I'm not sure if there is a method to the madness

^I think the reasoning for that is you will hear bands like Yes and Pink Floyd on classic rock radio stations. A band can be classic rock and progressive rock at the same time.

I don't agree, while it may have been hard rock/heavy metal and I like both Tull and Metallica, I still think Metallica should have won.
