Topic: clash of the titans - Paul Simon vs Paul McCartney Posted: May 06 2015 at 14:08 |
both are
ABSOLUTE GIANTS legends of singer and songwriting craft, they have been at it
since the beginning of the 60, and are still creative, their legacy is as the
width between Liverpool and New York, cross the Atlantic, both understood
melody more than most, with the exception of Brian Wilson, Cat Stevens, I find
Paul Simon to be the better lyricist, but Paul the best vocalist, but Simon is
a brilliant singer as well, and McCartney wrote Yesterday and many other great
songs with lyrics of high standard.
botn are masters, bit Whos the master of e two masters.

Paul McCartney would have the edge while he was with The Beatles, but I have to give it to Paul Simon over the length of his career.

Since there was a "both" option, I went with that, but generally prefer Simon over Mac post 1970.

Simon has written some absolute classics (I'd rate "The Boxer" as his finest hour) but McCartney trounces him easily imo. Macca is also an underrated lyricist (check out "She's Leaving Home") and Simon's lyrics occasionally jar (e.g. some of the words on Graceland the album don't really fit in with the musical style).

Hard to say, really. Post Beatles I think McCartney is pretty unremarkable/poor, from Wings to The Frog Chorus...
Based on overall career I think Paul Simon wins out slightly

Paul Simon by a mile. McCartney has done nothing remarkable since the Beatles IMO. Most of his best work was done in collaboration with John Lennon.

McCartney is still riding on the coat tails of the fab four, it's the only reason people even know who he is today.
Paul Simon by a long shot.

Actually he wrote very little with Lennon after the early days of The Beatles. Most of his best Beatles' songs were solo efforts (e.g. Yesterday).

It was true of both of them. Lennon did mostly uninspired stuff after the Fab Four as well. Even though they began writing more and and more on their own, I think they still influenced each other. I'm not a big fan of Yesterday. It's very well written but schmaltzy like so much of his music. One my favorite McCartney songs is a little ditty--Rocky Raccoon--which he wrote but partially credits to JL as an inspiration.

Paul Simon is my favourite male artist, he is awesome. My favorite song from him is The Cool, Cool River. The two albums Hearts And Bones and The Rhythm of The Saints are masterpieces in my book and most of his albums are great.
Paul McCartney isn't all that great imo.

Very difficult. Like them both. As songwriters they weren't so far apart from each other in terms of excellence. McCartney was the more prolific songwriter, but Simon wrote some better lyrics, but McCartney wrote maybe the best lyrics on the other hand with "She's Leaving Home"... Luckily there's a BOTH option, which I choose.

I was going to consider Beatle McCartney compared to solo McCartney but it doesn't really matter. While McCartney was writing great songs for The Beatles Paul Simon was writing great songs for Simon and Garfunkel (including three #1 hits). As far as solo careers, I think Simon had McCartney beat there as well.
