Topic: Camel's "Rain Dances" Posted: May 06 2015 at 20:09 |
So today, I went to one of my favorite record stores, Record Jungle in Montebello, California, and these are the goodies I picked up.
However, as I was inspecting my records once I got home, I noticed something really interesting....
As I got to "Rain Dances," I noticed that in fact it's a "new" record! I use the term a bit loosely because it's clipped on the upper left hand corner. But regardless, I thought it was pretty awesome and at a good price.
Now, I ask this...what do you guys think I should do? I'm fairly new to collecting vinyls so I'm not sure what the appropriate protocol is here. My gut is saying to not open it and treasure it as it is, as many of you might say.
Also, does this make the album more valuable or is its value hindered due to the clip, which I would assume will be the case?
I appreciate any comments/tips!

I may be 100% wrong but i don't think the clip means anything..
Just listen to the record. Not like you're just going to let it sit there for 20 years.

I think the most valuable aspect of the record is the music, so...

I believe that back in the day of 'mainstream' record shops, stock that has been sitting around for a while needed to be cleared out, and in order for it to be significantly reduced, the product 'technically' needed to be 'damaged'. Hence either hole-punched in the corner, a little cut, or a chunk off the corner like this Camel example. BTW, excellent haul. I see Chicago Transit Authority !!! Superb.

Hmmm...I'm not sure how valuable it will be with that bite in the corner, I mean it would be expesive for you too if it had to be.
But anyway great titles you got there and as always I'd like to point out the obscure one in the bunch, Automatic Man! there's a cool album you don't see every day

Superb. | Although I'm British, I spent a lot of time in New York in the 1970s and can confirm that the clipped corner was very common when buying discounted vinyl then.

Rain Dances is my favorite Camel album, bar none. I also first heard it on vinyl, in 1990. I bought it dirt cheap, sealed and new, in a used record store and had my first taste of the magic of camel. I also picked up Nektar's Magic is a Child, but Rain Dances was far and away the better album. "Skylines" is a wonderful piece of music!

^ Yep - Skyline. Andy Latimer - Sore Fingers (probably, he played excellent bass in this track)

I could easily see why Rain Dances could be a favorite Camel album for some. It's certainly their jazziest, and is really the album where the fluidity of Latimer's leads reaches its apex. I think I was too young when it came out to fully appreciate it, and it was such a departure from Moonmadness, which I was totally in love with.
Open and enjoy I say!

I opened it a couple of days ago
Interesting how it hadn't been opened until 38 years after its original release. A great album, too. I'm a fan of Richard Sinclair's singing and bass playing so this one was a no-brainer.

^ Well done ............and I can agree about Richard Sinclair !! Back in the late-90's, I picked up a sealed copy of Brand X 'Livestock' album. Similarly, it had a thin cut in it at one corner, but was unplayed until then. Same story with my LP's of Chicago 13 and Magma Live. I had a friend who bought a sealed copy of Led Zepp III, but it was warped beyond belief

Superb album almost as good as Moonmadness. F&%k they don't make them like this anymore!
Play the album, as much as possible. You do not know how many spins you have for this epic. Firstlight .....

I don't get how so many folks think this album is 'lacklustre'.....??? It is soooooo different from Moonmadness, it is sooooo different from Snow Goose...... etc...... Really, count me in for Rich.........he definitely brought in a different sound for the band......

The cut corner or punched hole were referred to as "cut outs" and were overstock or discontinued items that were sold at a discount. The cut prevented a customer from buying a discounted album from one store and taking it to another store and exchanging it for a full price album. Back then single albums sold for about $4.99 and cut outs were usually $1.99 or $2.99 depending on the band or album. Serious collectors do not like cut outs because they value an album by disc and cover and even original inner sleeve, inserts, booklets, posters, etc. Most music fans don't care about cut outs because they just want the music.
