Hi prog community, I have recently moved from Germany to Japan and will live there for a while. Do you have any recommendation for a prog lover to see in Japan or Tokyo, where I am now residing, for example an interesting record shop/concert/venue/club/other places? Unfortunately I do not understand Japanese at all, only English (or German respectively). Recommendations are highly appreciated, thank you! Beer

Hi!  The Japanese music fans are really into Facebook, so look around on that site.  I just searched "prog Japan" and watched a live music video of an interesting band.

I'm in touch with some Japanese power-pop fans (since I love that genre as well), you should find it if you look!
Best wishes & good luck! Clap

Start diving into Math-Rock. It's 90% of the time instrumental and Japan has a real great scene for the genre. Some of my favorite MR bands come from there.

Try Nuito, Toe and Lite for starters.

Thank you for considering Smile. But I was more thinking along the lines: if you know of a good prog band (japanese or not) who is going to play in or around Tokyo, please let me know. Or just in case if you happen to know  of a record shop where you can find all the prog rarities... something like this. Sometimes I see some advertising of bands playing, but as I can't read Japanese I have no idea what kind of music they are playing, let alone reading the names! LOL

Oh sorry for my belated reaction (I've not noticed before getting PM from you Anne). Embarrassed

If you have enough time to attend some gigs in Tokyo, I'll alert ... especially as for a Japanese RIO / Avant combo Le Silo, a Neo-prog duo Neo Zonk (an offshoot of Zonk Monk), or a jazz rock keyboardist Taku Yabuki.

Thanks, that his highly appreciated! Thumbs Up
Btw, I managed to see King Crimson in Tokyo, in one of the six very quickly sold out concerts! I have the feeling prog in general is much more popular in Japan than in Germany!

I remember a video of Malmsteen performing in Japan. The audience was very euphoric ... Prog, fusion and metal seem popular in Japan ...

One interesting place in Tokyo:

The Enid is having a two night concert in about a week in Shibuya playing their first two records. I'd love to see it but I hope if they still have tickets available you can check it out. Great band and those albums are so good.

Japan is a great place for music.....I lived in Asia for 25 years and my trips to Japan always started and ended at used record shops.  The live music scene is also hot, especially for jazz.....the only problem is that tickets are often waaaaay overpriced.

Enjoy Japan.....the food; the temples; the gardens.....Japan is a dream.
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

I was also going to suggest DamoXt's suggestions and postings on the Krautrock thread ... endless listings of Japanese stuff.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I just wanted to thank the people who suggested the Silver Elephant club in Kichijoji, Tokyo. I went there now to two concerts already, one was KBB, the other one, just today, was the Shingetsu Project. Both concerts were great and absolutely awesome! Yuck, I have not known that earlier! I think now, that Japan is a prog heaven! Hug

To find out about concerts, use the Tokyo Gig Guide website, it's in English.

Here is a link: http://www.tokyogigguide.com/en/gigs

If you are looking for a good Progressive Rock music store, go to the main Disk Union store in Shinjuku. The 3rd floor is completely dedicated to Progressive Rock.
