I'm so happy that Ozrics puts out the new album. As for me, it's fine record (but where is Champignon?). And what is your impressions?

Nice cover art but the tracks I have heard so far are very similar to previous material by the band. It's all a bit too samey for me. I have felt the same way about most of their albums - with the exception of Hidden Step. Someone on this website once recommended Hydria Space folk as an alternative to the Ozrics - I agree with this.

Yeah....I have 5 or 6 of their earlier albums and after a while there is a great deal of 'sameness'.
I still like them but there are too many other bands to check out before I buy more OT.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

I have around 12-15 Ozric albums, and while the aforementioned "sameness" threads its way through some albums, many nonetheless remain vibrant and engaging. The last one, Paper Monkeys, was something I considered a return to form upon my first listen.
 
 
I'll definitely be checking out the new album.

The new album essentially comes across as `more of the same' in the style of their last few albums (well, pretty much all of the ones that have come after `The Hidden Step'), but it's the most focused and inspired attempt so far. If you like `Spirals in Hyperspace', `The Yum Yum Tree' etc, this new one is just like those but consistently strong the whole way.

There's also less of that heavy 80's electric guitar sound, much more emphasis on synths and acoustic guitar (or cleaner sounding electric guitar), so that's a good thing to my ears!

If you like the band, you'll likely love this one. It's probably their best since `The Hidden Step'.

I haven't got my hands on this one yet (holding out till the vinyl appears) but there one thing that I truly miss in their post-Zia albums, and that's the prescence of good, strong bass. Sure, Brandi is excellent, particularly in live performance, but severely underused on the studio recordings. I'm hoping she puts in a strong performance on this new one.

I have a lot of their albums but stopped adding new ones because you really do get a lot of sameness.  Which may or may not be a bad thing Big smile
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Yeah, I have the first 6 or so albums. All good stuff, but they haven't really progressed much. Neverthless, I've had some great times getting completely battered to their music...

They don't change to much, but there is a gradual 'progression'.
If you've only heard the first six or so, then the mid period stuff is well worth a listen as it's a definite change in feel. Also the later albums are a different vibe again.
Personally I favour the middle ones but still, the new album has some great tracks. I'm not sure it really warranted a double CD release though

My answer is cold of one year now, but anyway :). First, this double album is a chance we didn't had since Erpland to get into Ozric's world during 80 minutes, no boring moments even after 20 albums. And for a sameness-called band, it works pretty well. In fact it's the same but it changes enough to stay interesting. It becomes more sophisticated than before. Really, synth bass parts are better crafted than older bass parts. And, of course for a band of this quality, they explore new things on each albums, maybe more in Technicians for example the weird melody of The Unusual Village uses strange dissonances in a avant-garde way which is absolutely new in their style. It's always great and full of creativity :)

In this case - death to synth-bass..............even if some of the parts are impossible to play on a real bass, I just can't love it like the good ol' days (Roly, Zia.......etc.)

Hi,

This is the first time I have not bought a CD by this band in over 15 to 20 years. The past 4 or 5 CD's kinda all sound the same, and I finally gave up.

When John left (Champignon) I think the band lost a touch that made sense and helped add personality to the music. The band, now, just has notes and chords and sound effects, to try and make its music more attractive, and while the wife is probably a more interesting bass player than the previous one, in the end, both of them are nothing but "support suspenders" for Ed Wynne, and the music will suffer, because no one can give him alternatives, and strong musical counter points to help him develop his ideas.

I'm a great fan of "Strangeitude" ... and that is exactly what the band has been missing for a long time!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Now here I am, giving TotS yet another try (I bought the LP edition so I'm gonna play it). There are indeed some tasteful atmospheres, it's totally fine 'electronica', but, for me, it lacks a full band spirit and spontenaiety that the 90's albums possess. I don't hear the joy that they put into those classic 90's releases (and the 6 'tape' albums for that matter) - they seem to be on auto-pilot, for want of a better term.....this album just seems to drift along, without making any statements. 3 stars, max.

The High Pass (great opener, as you'd expect)
Epiphlioy (reminds me of Saucers, I guess the acoustic work)
Zenlike Creature (reminds me of a track off Arborescence, Myriapod perhaps)
..............the rest, forgettable
.....oh, Far Memory was fine, too
