Okay, this is a strange request and just for my own amusement. I'd like examples of songs that have a brief vocal section at (or near the beginning), not more than a handful of lines; followed by a much longer instrumental section/s that make up the main part of the song; and ended by another (or the same) brief vocal section.

This doesn't include, say, songs that have several verses & choruses at the beginning, with a bridge or solo extended out as the instrumental section- the instrumental has to be a significant majority of the song.


I know I've heard multiple songs like this; but they're not coming to me; Firth of Fifth comes pretty close to fulfilling this, as does Spirit Photography by Kayo Dot.

I was just thinking about this the other day actually. Cool


One of my favoriteeeee albums does it perfectly. Hopefully these guys do you some justice. I chose the longer songs for a more significant difference between the instrumental time and vocal section. Then, one that has the vocals near the end (first song) and one near the beginning. (second). 







Same album.

Pretend  - Bones in the Soil, Rust in the Oil.

I think Sonic Youth probably has at least one. I know "Rain On Tin" has brief vocals at the beginning but not at the end.

This one is not bookended but it is a 10 minute song where vocals don't start until about 8 minutes. Also, one of the best songs from that era imo.

Diamond Sea sprang to mind, but listening to it again there's no vocals at the end. thought there was.
 
Wildflower Soul kind of does
 
vocals from 0:30 - 2:40, then again from 8:10 - 9:00.  a bit more than 'brief' vocals at the start I guess

i thought you meant albums here, as i would've went with In the Wake of Poseidon. but nope, at least i can go to Pictures of a City now in this regard.

Not really completely fitting the criteria here, but I do like the vocals in Genesis' Duke during the short section after Duchess titled Guide Vocal that contains "Take what's yours, and be damned!"

Tull's "Pibroch (Cap in Hand)" from Songs from the Wood. Intro guitar and two stanzas of lyric (ending at 3:18), followed by a long instrumental (ending at 6:52), and then a final stanza and outro guitar to complete the 8:30 composition. 
 
There's a light in the house in the wood in the valley.

Who carries his dreams like the coat slung on his shoulder,
Bringing you love in the cap in his hand.

They're one of my favorite bands. If you're looking for stuff that comes back after long exploratory sections, Washing Machine might be the best place to start. Otherwise, Daydream Nation is a good place to start.

Thanks again all. A couple of what are technically hits, but even so they don't generally capture quite the feel I was looking for, but it doesn't matter, looks like they're few and far between anyhow.
