Illusions On A Double Dimple?  The surprise of the tournament so far.

Yes it is a great album... personal tastes aside.. there were 256 great albums here. However to beat Area and Caravan in the first two rounds both famous and high qualty bands with large fan clubs..not bad for an album rarely to ever mentioned here except for the groups #1 fan (and only member OF the groups fanclub here hahah).. Impressive...Clap

Well, you posted a nice soundbyte of IOADD which, I think, was in their favour.
The exploration game is not only in the modern polls.
The classic polls also have some surprises for some of us( definitely for me).
That they beat Area is not sp surprising: that's an acquired taste.
That they beat Caravan was more surprising, but Waterloo Lily is less popular than the other classic albums by them (yes, maybe not worse )

hmmm true that. I do think I tend to forget that not everyone knows all teh classics... though I suppose if I ever needed reminder I just have to look at some of the polls. The ones without the 'usual suspects' and note they get a 1/3 or half the number of votes as the more well known ones.

Poor Area... they lost out to IOADD on a tiebreaker. Which surprised me, as it was percentage of 4 and 5 star reviews to numbers of reivews.  and for losing out on that they got a bad matchup against M.O.

Caravan?  Yeah... other than a few albums I regret not including.. my main regret was doing Caravan wrong.  Or not doing to others what I did to Caravan.  Removing its best most popular albums and going with a lesser aclaimed gem...   that would have worked.. but I wasn't consistent and did the same with other 2nd tier heavy hitters like VDGG or Gentle Giant. Again.. why I predicted Pawn Hearts and Octopus would meet in the final.  If I had to do over again I would have gone with H to He and Acquiring the Taste

Area is still an acquired taste and I think the 4 and 5 star reviews come from a distinct group of people on PA. I could imagine that the 'masses' aren't ready for Area yet. Triumvirat may have a broader possible audience. But the people who like Area, often really love Area. Methinks.

so A Salty Dog move on to the 3rd round.

updated Classic brackets here.

http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=459336

Interesting side note... of the 16 1st round poll winners... 14 won their 2nd round matchups.  Give a hand to the 2 1st round runner-ups that beat 1st round winners.

A Salty Dog and The Rotters Club Clap

Next up.. starting the Modern Polls.

which means there will be 2 'semi' 1st round rematches

Palepoli and A Salty Dog

and

A Farewell to Kings and The Rotters Club

will be interesting to see if the 3rd round results are different due to not having the other 2 1st round albums taking potential votes.

You got to give people some time going from... let's say... crossover to RIO/avant.
I remember somebody who went that route

yeah..  but.. well... ummm..  got me there.

funny you mention that.  Perhaps my first real RIO-avant attempts were ..well before Romantic Wariors 2.. before Ian became my musical mentor ... before my break from the site where the live music scene we have been exploring (mainly rio-avant)... even before I was king of Xover..

to discovering and actually enjoying the Demetrio Stratos solos albums.. whew... definitely not easy listening there LOL

I think it is unfair and unwise to attempt to pigeonhole Area. We dealt and debated this group heavily among a couple of the teams as J-R had them and RPI wanted them. Area is not RIO/Avant.. not any more than they are a merely fusion group.  They sort of mix all those cool ingredients including Italian/Mediterranean music into one unique and ass kicking kind of stew.  That is why some, including myself, consider them one of the most unique.. thus valid.. of all prog groups. They didn't follow anyone..  just their own paths.. both politically.. and musically..and of course the inevitable merger of the two, musical and political, which was the trump card we threw down in getting them into RPI.

For the latest polls these ones didn't accept my vote in bold:

Images & Words v. Disco Volante (surprisingly won't need my voteShocked)
Kid A v. Nothingface (love both but wanted to vote for the underdog)
Detta Har Hant v. Quickly Quick (this one might need my vote)

updated modern bracket..

http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=459422

not a good showing for the favorites... 2 close wins over less heralded albums..

(8-8) - 3rd round - classic bracket 16 polls
(8-15) - 3rd round - modern bracket 16 polls
(8-22) - 4th round - classic bracket 8 polls
(8-29) - 4th round - modern bracket 8 polls
(9-5) - Progspin offices closed for Progday weekend
(9-12) - Quarterfinals - classic and moderns 8 polls
(9-19) - Semi-Finals - classic and moderns 4 polls

well today should be fun...  posting the new polls should be an ordeal considering how wonky the forum seems to be.  Oh well...

Last call for votes on the 2nd round classics.. a couple are still very much in play!

1 hour to close!!
