Phil Collins has always stood out to me as an artist, even when I was a very young child, WAY before I ever got into progressive music. I've always loved his voice. Opinions may vary, but he's always stood out to me, even before I began researching heavily.

Why is Collins OK ?
As a drummer there are few his equal. As a frontman, a bit cheesy in his presentation but that is his background and personality coming through. As a singer at least he doesn't sound like he has his testicles caught in a bear trap but neither does he sound overly generic. As a songwriter perhaps a but limited lyrically but melodically and rythmically he is on the money.
How the hell he can be blamed cos the other bloke walked I do not know even though the other bloke was so important to early Genesis. Beyond that it is also pretty obvious that Hacket walked because of Banks and possibly Rutherford so again Collins .... not guilty m'lud. It's interesting isn't it that Collins, not Banks, not Rutherford, has played with Gabriel post the schism of '75.
How the hell he can be blamed for Genesis going pop when Follow You Follow Me was primarily a Rutherford/Banks composition and it was that piece of rubbish that made sure Genesis ended up a pop group. (Piece of rubbish ? Damn I wish I was banking the royalties, but it is one of my least favourite G tracks.)
Face Value. (which was after all released well after Duke had already gone to Number One in the UK)

I think Phil is great. Rutherford was as much to blame as Phil for taking Genesis in a more commercial-sounding direction. Rutherford is the member who is most dismissive of early Genesis classics. Whereas Phil has stated that Genesis were at their peak on The Lamb album. So I think that Phil has become a scapegoat for every misguided fool who believes that he was responsible for the demise of the golden age of prog.
I agree---but Genesis rise to superstardom follows Phil's solo stellar career. I don't think Mike or Tony were going to fight that---they rode that wave---as I think they think the Beatles were super popular pop stars themselves.

I recall at the time of Invisible Touch hitting the shelves - Banks claims that it is, and I quote from an old Genesis mag I've had since 1986 ; "this is by far the best record we've done"............ Wot ?? Better than Selling England ?? Better than A Trick Of The Tail ?? I think not, Tony. The 'poppier' direction that Genesis took was not to be blamed on PhilCo alone. I don't even think a Novatron could've saved IT from being a Pop album. It's a fairly mediocre album that I can appreciate, and I much prefer the live versions of the longer things, but I don't fell Phil deserves all the stick he cops.

^ I think I've still got that mag somewhere as well. Is it the one written by Chris Welch? It's chock full of spelling errors, and as I recall, completely missed out W&W in its retrosepctive of Genesis albums!

^ That could be - 'The Invisible Tour' is the title. It has Banks' opinion on all albums - don't recall W&W !! And Phil's page starts off with 'all things to all men'. I have the mag tucked away in my cupboard with tour programmes and my Ozracle fan-club stuff. Haven't read it for a few years, but I know it inside out. And the duet Phil did with the EWF dude, Easy Lover, is a damn good pop-song. I also have Frida's solo Something's Going On, which has Phil all over it, and another enjoyable album. Only Phil solo's I have are Face Value and Serious Hits Live (the album with a merry-go-round on the cover - Mr Collins's Galloping Horses - yeah, Collins's........good English right there

Mr. Collins was usually "all over" albums he produced (Frida's Something's Going On, Adam Ant's Strip, Philip Bailey's Chinese Wall, etc.).

I had to dig it out - Genesis Special - The Invisible Report 1987. Man, that mag was the 'bee's knees' for me around that time.
