To think Lee was somehow propped-up by his artists and writers does do him a real disservice.  As far as I know, it was Lee who provided the inspiration and impetus for much of the classic Marvel titles.  Not unlike George Lucas, he brought talented people together toward his vision.

^ He stole that from Hitchcock but then so did others.

He is the main person responsible for the Marvel Universe but certainly others had a big part in it also....so give him the lion's share of the credit but let's not forget others like Kirby and Ditko, etc.

I still have a complete run of the original Dr Strange as well as the early Strange tales issues he first appeared in...with other superheroes as well as Nick Fury.

He deserves it. Because whatever role he's been playing behind-the-scenes at Marvel, he has always done a great job as the public face of the company. I've never heard a bad thing about him, and even now, at 116 years of age, he still has all the youth and enthusiasm of a 15-year-old reading Spider-Man for the first time.

And plus, he "created" or inspired or whatever, most of Marvel's major/classic characters.

There are people out there who deserves so much more respect. John Wagner+Alan Grant duo, for example.
