Please not Opeth. I saw them in 2010 and they were a metal band - pure and simple. Even the singer was growling in that cartoon voice - I think we were supposed to be scared or something. Have they somehow kidded everyone into thinking they are prog? At a friend's insistence I listened to that album with the tree on it and it did not alter my initial impression.

Okay, I finally decided. Not a strong group of albums IMO. Was never big on Opeth, Jean Louis I like but not more than the Hoof (who I prefer other albums from). By process of elimination I end up voting for Pelican.

Me too.
The only reason I want to remember the name Opeth is to ensure I never ever listen to them again.
I guess one man's boring is an old farts soothing.
If you like the more melodic stuff, you would do yourself a disservice by eliminating Opeth from your musical world. They have gone full-on prog in their last couple of albums (Heritage and Pale Communion), and ditched the growls completely. Personally, I find their new direction very uninspiring (that's a polite way of saying boring), but most prog fans have been lapping it up. You might also want to check their previous growl-less album, Damnation, which was produced by none other than Steven Wilson.
