I was searching for something else when I came across this little "gem": http://www.wikihow.com/Enjoy-Progressive-Rock
Apparently I've been doing it all wrong over the years.  According to this, before enjoying the music I have to understand all the complex genres and sub-genres.
They recommend to get into progressive rock you start out with Genesis - mainly the 80s songs.  (Were they prog? Oh wait, we've done that argument before).  I don't know whether to laugh or cry with this article, it seems so patronising. Progressive rock for dummies?

I'm trying to work out what sort of person sits down and thinks "I'm going to try getting into Progressive Rock. Let's look on the internet to find out how."

Oh and apparently drugs have nothing to do with it (see the end). Never thought they did, having been into it for 35 years and never taken anything stronger than alcohol Wink

Opinions?

Quote Gentle Giant – This band’s music is easy to get into

Some people may disagree with that opinion ...

Honestly, the fact that there's an article literally titled "How to Enjoy Progressive Rock" is just hilarious. There shouldn't be an article telling people how to enjoy music in general, especially considering the fact that music is subjective and everybody has different methods of getting into certain genres. Wikihow is pretty funny sometimes.

I read this article a few months ago, it's more funny than informative LOL I guess I never enjoyed Prog, since I never liked 80's Genesis Tongue

I couldn't say it better. You like music for your own personal reasons, and enjoy it regardless of what somebody thinks you should do to get into it.

I can't decide whether this article is being tongue-in-cheek or serious. If it's the latter then they're truly scraping the barrel of unintelligent advice.

It's a good article (if ranking as 'poor', 'avarage', 'good' and 'awesome') for the kids.

Haha, not surprising when you consider that alcohol is one of the hardest drugs^^
You should really try to listen to prog while high, its awesome.
psychedelic rock is what got me into prog couple years ago, and its what prog emerged out of, so its no coincidence psychedelics and prog work well together

That's not a poorly written list though I'd think it a joke if it weren't so serious.   It's funny that 'Eclectic Prog' is now an Net-accepted term.   That's a PA creation.   When we coined it, the snickering was audible.

IndeedWink. I remember getting into an argument on an Italian forum because I was defending the Eclectic definition (which, if my memory serves me right, was a product of my own warped mindLOL).

Edit: I have read much worse articles on prog, though the article is clearly not meant for seasoned listeners like us. Anyway, whoever wrote that should be commended for genuinely trying to introduce would-be listeners to prog, instead of patronizing the whole genre and its fandom as many others have done.

i would've said to start with Yes and the 3-disc The Ultimate Yes and go from there like I did or Rush with the Gold compilation, and then go through each of the albums. that's what i usually do, though there's an exception (Radiohead).

The writer obviously got the definitions directly from PA...

...and all this time I should have been taking notes while listening!

He's obviously a big fan who wants more people to like what he likes.
