...and Flaming Lips did a track by track remake of In The Court Of The Crimson King entitled Playing Hide And Seek With The Ghosts Of Dawn back in 2012. ...and they've covered "Heart Of The Sunrise." So yeah, anything's possible.

I started with Jethro Tull, and moved on from there to Genesis and Gentle Giant. If I'd started with Yes I would probably never have explored progressive rock any further, but to each his own.

I kinda agree with you Raff. I just find the whole thing rather ridiculous tbh. Like this pseudo-prog-bootcamp where you are trained in listening to a specific kind of music. I don't get that at all. Maybe if I compare it to eating chilis? One shouldn't start out with a ghost pepper but rather sprinkle a few drops of tabasco on a fruitpie. Wow now I get it  I just would've worded my article a little differently and spoken more of chilis, if I were to introduce prog to newbies......and almost certainly picked a different set of artists/albums.

I didn't feel the need for any extra exposition by bringing up these additional subpar covers from the Lips and their offshoot group the Electric Worms, but thanks anyway.

Almost completely wrong, and the worst depiction of Page and Plant I have ever seen. Here is my advice, for what it may be worth: 1. Listen to what you like. Don't like it because someone else said you should, but don't dislike it for the same reason. 2. Be open to new stuff. 3. Feel free to accept or reject whatever comes your way. 4. It's all music. Sub-genres just give a guideline into what to expect. The lines blur everywhere. 5. What band to start with depends on the band's output as well as your own interests and tastes. Genesis may work, but 80s Genesis is different from 70s Genesis. Same for Yes, King Crimson, and countless others. 6. Explore a variety of bands and sub-genres.. Don't expect them all to sound the same. 7. Don't take notes, but listen. Most people respond to music emotionally rather than intellectually. Don't turn it into a school assignment (unless that's how you roll). 8. Once you get the taste, then you can start to think more consciously about it and explore the field even more. Don't turn your mind off completely; assume you will get the taste at some point. 9. Some knowledge of music will enhance appreciation but may have nothing to do with enjoyment. 10. Yes, watch videos, communicate with others; ask for recommendations and follow recommended links. Note to the recommenders: Don't expect others to like exactly what you like for the same reasons. An over zealous progger can easily turn a neophyte into a hater, and no one wants that. 11. Above all, enjoy what you are doing.

I'll admit that in 1972/3 and 4, there was some augmentation to the music. A good hit of acid and laying down on the couch and listening to CTTE, or Echoes, or TAAB or APP ... was an awesome experience. Nowadays ... yeah ... DE's suggestion is the best! And we don't mean just 5 minutes of it, which I think is the most important part, since nowadays, there are way too many "prog" folks that can only listen to radio cuts!

I presume the Wiki-How for enjoying sex involves putting on a little mood music like Gentle Giant, because it's "easy to get into." It also has a good beat and is easy to dance to.
Just think of Mr. Smooth turning down the lights, pouring some fine brandy, and putting on "The Power and the Glory."

That's about the same for me, except that my older brothers played a lot of prog in my childhood days. But forgetting about it in my teenage years, I heard Abacab, liked it, got Duke and Live and And Then There Were Three, and then went from the Genesis back catalogue towards other prog bands like Yes, King Crimson and ELP. So a bit like the writer of the article suggested. I don't know, such a listening procedure, it might work for some. Most of us work are explorers by heart, I suppose, and one step leads to another.

I use a method paraphrased from a classic episode of "The Odd Couple" TV show: 1. Take a very small listen of the music. 2. Swish it around inside of your head. 3. Continue swishing until it sound like old furniture polish. 4. Spit it out into a glass. Anything less is uncivilized.
