So now that ripping a copy of a CD you've just bought to play on your MP3 player is illegal again (http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/33566933/ripping-music-and-films-illegal-again-after-high-court-overturns-new-law), how does this leave Amazon's AutoRip feature?

For instance, I recently bought a CD for a friend's birthday present and Amazon automatically added a copy to my Cloud collection, so I've downloaded it onto my MP3 player. Is this illegal as well? Will Amazon have to stop providing this service?

So sorry to hear this.  That ruling is total bull-Censored

This will drive ever more people to streaming, I think - is that what the artists want?  I thought they were so poorly compensated from streaming services.

I agree - if I've paid money for a CD, I should be able to rip it to MP3 so I can play it on my MP3 player and in my car (provided I don't then upload the MP3 files for others to copy). There's no loss to the musician there.

So...it's illegal to rip and burn cd's for your own car player and at home..?

One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

So this basically means that we have no control over something we buy with our own money?
Life is strange.

Probably not the most intelligent way of putting a stop to illegal downloading.

There is a lot of criticism to Russian State Duma, where some inadequate deputies offer idiotic laws, but it seems there are enough idiots everywhere. Where the hell good old Britain goes? God, save the Queen *sighs*.

I think just like back in the day with vinyl, against the law to make a copy of your vinyl and put it on cassette, reel to reel.
I highly doubt this will stop anyone from ripping a CD to your laptop or media player.

What did they think all those blank cassettes were being used for?? Make a recording of fart sounds, although that is pretty funny. I would hate to be the one holding the mic. Dead

The biggest BS part of this ruling is that the sale of blank CD's and DVD's, just like the sale of cassettes were, has a built in tax that is supposed to go to a group fund for the artists to compensate them for this very cause. Do you think that now that the law has been struck down you'll see a eduction in the cost of blanks?

BTW, the answer is absofrickinlutly NOT !!

While this is clearly a UK law, and even though I live in an ex-colony of the UK (don't most of us in some way?) I'll continue to burn copies of my CD's for use in my car while I travel in order to protect MY investment in the case of damage or theft.

UK High Court...GO POUND SAND!!!
Thank you for supporting independently produced music

Even in the US, the situation is bizarre.  The RIAA's position is that there is no legal right to rip a CD for personal use, but they state in practice they're fine with it and won't go after anyone for doing it.

I just used Amazon's Auto Rip 3 days ago. Managed to rip 4 out of 5 CDs I purchased. For whatever reason, there is always one that isn't rippable (if that is a word).

I don't quite get that - if you buy a CD from Amazon with Autorip then you just download it, you don't rip it yourself. Having said that, I don't think all CDs from Amazon have Autorip.
