Yeah, I would have voted for Gentle Giant if they were in the poll. I'm going to vote Jethro Tull.

whether humanly (arrogance, pompousness,, etc..) or musically, ELP is from far the Universe champion of pretentiousness. Next come Yes in both categories(Anderson's lyrics and Squire's arrogance) I never thought of Genesis or Crimson as pretentious (except for Fripp's conduct), nor VdGG. However, musically speaking i find Gentre Giant quite pretentious: i mean these guys went out of their way to make complicated music, and it sounds like.... whereas, I never (or rarely) found it the same with other bands I went with VdGG as my choice, but Tull was a close second, though I suspect if their line-up had remained more constant, it might have been a different business/ambiance |

Many music critics accused progressive rock to be "Pretentious" , meaning their stage shows and music was over the top, far more than they were really capable of. They use this as an excuse to rule out progressive rock bands from the mainstream current of those times, so if we consider them pretentious, we are somehow contributing to that cliché, which is a very poor excuse to cover their lack of knowledge of music composition, arrangements, orchestration, etc.

At times I think they were all equally 'pretentious' with their music and stage acts.
But I have to say that Ian Anderson's stage act seemed pretentious at times if that's the right word....

I do not find any of the listed artists pretentious. They are writing and performing the music they love, in the way that they feel it should be done, and at the same time providing the audience with a good show. What I find pretentious are the modern mega pop stars lip synching their way through songs that are ghost written for them by a very small number of songwriters working in music mills, and passing these off as their own. This practice has been well documented for quite some time. Just listen to Kelly Clarkson's "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger" and Katy Perry's "Roar", and try to tell me that these "empowerment anthems" were penned by different people. And speaking of Perry, is she doesn't perform "Shake It Off" without using a "Shake Weight" to demonstrate what she is singing about, that's pretention. |

Genesis---if u think this is pretentious--you've been taken for a ride............
I know it may seem weird but I actually think Genesis isn't pretentious compared to the others listed. With Tull a close second.

Exactly. I do not see why most of you think that Tull is less pretentious. Either all of them are or neither... If this word is used seriously, it is used for bashing all of prog, and I will not contribute to this cliche, as another one mentioned here earlier. And if it is used as a joke... well, you can laugh here. |

By definition, geniuses can't be pretentious. These acts are all musical geniuses. Ergo, none are pretentious.
On the other hand - using the word 'ergo' ....
