 Topic: Best prog rock album

What do you think is the best prog rock album ever made? I think it's either Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd or Brain Salad Surgery by Emerson Lake and Palmer. Tell me what you think is the best prog rock album ever made.

I'm in with the YS camp..
unique.. there is not a prog rock album out there like it... and represents everything prog is. The hammond, 'tron, and moog synth leading the way all as lead instruments.
oh.. and it rules musically... it puts that pansy sh*t to shame...

Maybe L'Isola Di Niente by PFM. Not because it was the most original. But it touchest me the deepest. Even prog music is emotion  .

Relayer for me, gates punches me in the mouth then sounds chaser kicks while I'm down, finally and to be over is the song that plays while someone scoops up chunks of brain and skull bits off the floor after my mind has been thoroughly blown

I'm not sure I would agree to a 'best' anything in music but I have favourites......and they tend to change with the wind or within the hour.
My favourite prog album right this minute? Hmmmm Clivage's Mixtus Orbis....but really it could be any one of at least a dozen different albums.

The Snow Goose by Camel.
Nothing comes close for melody, beauty, emotion and sheer innovation in interpreting a story without words, using musical motives to represent characters and scenes.
Runner up is The Tain by Horslips. As you can see, I like concept albums.

You find progressive rock kind of a visceral experience, I'm guessing.

I do as well.. those are the albums that connect strongest with me. Music IS visceral.. it is for the senses not the brain. Artsy-fartsy is all well and good.. but give me something that grabs me by the heart.. or the balls... grab both and you've got a sure fire winner.

While I hesitate to call anything "best".....the one that has had the most longevity resonating with me on a special level is "Tales from Topographic Oceans." The regulars here already know that but since you're new I'll say it again. Many layers to peel back, fantastic playing, emotional ebb and flow. Despite the stories you read about unhappy keyboardist, Anderson and Howe stayed very focused and knew what they wanted. They very much succeeded. I think it contains Howe's strongest playing as a member of Yes, along with Relayer. And even Wakeman himself sonically plushes this album out beautifully. While my favorite track has changed over the years (currently The Ancient) I can say that not one minute of the album is what I consider "filler" or "noodling" as many reviewers think. This is a journey of an album that I am so happy was not condensed to a shorter length. Not unlike Oldfield's "Incantations" it is an album that refuses to be rushed. Play it only when you have the time to give it an unhurried listen.

agreed in principal Jim..
best is impossible to define.... greatest though is not. Just very difficult.
For many reasons.. yours and others.. I'd consider Tales to be the greatest prog album ever made.

My comment had more to do with the violent imagery used. I agree that music that grabs you by the guts and the heart is the best. Since I've never had music grab me by the balls I can't opine on that experience.

why do I use the being beat by a 2x4 analogy so often... violent imagery is often the purest, simplest and most effective means of expression.
