Jannick Top is and will always be number one.

When I listen to BP's first solo album 'Paga', I can see why many regard him as the best, but Top is just relentless. And that bass line of De Futura is just impossible to play. I can't work out how he does it - effortlessly when you watch him. The accelerando in the piece is breathtaking.

I’m a huge Magma fan; I have all their DVD’s and most of their cd’s.  However, I do not know the names of the bassists.  They’re all magnificent, but if I had to choose it would be….

Who is this guy?

Jannick is the man, though I have the highest admiration to Bussonnet and Paganotti!

That's an awesome record. His fretless solo on the opening track is on par with Jaco's solo on Havona.

Excellent observation !! That's EXACTLY who I think of when I hear Talk Back. Such a shame Paga isn't more well known. Oh, I think he's a great singer too.

I still haven't voted! Listening to AKT VIII, Bruxelles - Théâtre 140 from 1971 playing stuff from the first three albums, including Mekanïk Kommandöh, with Francis Moze, we'll see if it affects my vote.

I agree Re: Top's sound. I think even just the topic of sound is interesting for this consideration of Magma's bassists. To me, sound-wise Bernard Paganotti built on what Jannick Top started. But maybe Jannick Top felt more like a "core member," with later players seeming more like "the bassist" - not a bad thing of course! But the whole parallel Ork storyline, for example, points to a creative voice not often found this close to the source.

There is also the break between Jannick Top's earlier stuff with them and Üdü Ẁüdü (though only a couple of years max) - this is when Paganotti is in the band. Attahk is interesting too - there's a stylistic shift, and the introduction of the air bass/earth bass concept.

Anyway - still undecided! I did put on
Köhntarkösz, only got to listen to Part 1 - looking forward to Ork Alarm!

Jannick Top was in Space too, though there are a lot of tracks with synth bass - wonder if he played those lines?

For me, I think the Vander/Top displayed incredible potential that somehow didn't reach its apex, at least in the stuff that I have heard. Or maybe De Futura is the apex...

Nice! I'll be seeing him for the 4th time in March! It's true - his sound and his playing are impeccable - the energy with which he plays is perfect.
