apparently, this an ongoing thing in the magazine The Stranger where a person named Anna Minard who claims "to know nothing about music" (Shocked) listening to albums considering to be among the greatest of all time among music nerds. i mention this today because she listened to a certain In the Court of the Crimson King and now here are her thoughts.

I don't think these reviews are serious. The person in question is probably someone who knows quite a lot about music, and is writing a parody of the supposed reaction of someone who was truly ignorant. Just have a look at her other reviews (Syd Barrett's, for instance).

Yeah, I was surprised by the Pink Floyd reference in the Syd review for someone who knows nothing. She's also given quite good reviews that newbies would normally run a mile from such as an Eno Ambient album. Personally I just find them fun, I enjoyed reading a bunch of them.

I suppose that by knowing nothing about music they meant not knowing music theory.

I don't blame her for being forced to write a worthless article. The first time I heard SEBTP  I didn't like it at all.

I think she meant Greg's vocal on the opener.

For someone who claims to know nothing about music, she does too good of a job.

Two things.
1 - This speaks to the lack of attention span the modern world suffers from. 140 characters, 7 second videos etc. Slow down and take it all in. believe it or not, we do have the time.

2 - Somebody, please, make her listen to ELP's Brain Salad Surgery. Please, please!!

Oddly, the negative nature of the review might very well attract newbies who are truly looking for something besides the pop they sick and tired of.  Long songs?  Cooooooool.  Some good tunes, even for the uninitiated?  Yes!  References to Beatles and Led Zeppelin?  Oh, yeah.  The brainless will shy away.  They did in 1969, they do it today, and they will do it in 2169 and beyond.

I see it as a spoof on how kids consume music these days. In that way it's a very well written article.

Well, there may not be many female prog fans, but this does not give you the right to insult female reviewers. I am one of them, and have earned the respect of quite a few prog musicians. I thought the Middle Ages had been over for a while, anyway.

Just because you choose not to agree with my assessment, doesn't make it an insult.
I stated an opinion based on years of observation.

At the same time,
I wouldn't expect a positive review of a New Kids on the Block album by a random middle-aged man.
Well, not a straight  middle-aged man anyway. Wink

It's still an insult.

Fine. You are correct. I am wrong.

So we have established two concrete facts in this discussion:
1. I am a repugnantly insensitive human being.
2. The majority of women love King Crimson.

Case closed.

Raff please ignore this buffoon. You are a fantastic reviewer and a lovely person.

Personally I don't get why an old member (since 2004) would come back to the forum only to utter such nonsense. I guess some people just love taking cheap shots on account of people they don't know sh*t about.

How many female members does this site have?  This thread suggests around 10%.  Of course that has nothing to do with anybody's ability to enjoy or review anything, but prog definitely is a bit of a sausage-fest
