 Topic: Instrumental Albums a-la Finch, Arti, etc.

So, some of my favorite albums are instrumental albums. I know quite a few, and hope to know more. There's a few I consider masterpieces, and a few of the bands I include in that masterpiece-list is:
Blue Effect Arti e Mestieri Pekka Pohjola Finch (what an awesome band)
So... any instrumental bands that are on THIS LEVEL of awesomeness?

I own the same ones except for Arti...I'll have to ck that one out. There are a number of jazz fusion ones that come to mind...I would recommend both Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire by Mahavishnu Orchestra. I'll have to think about others.

And dr wu, I'm surprised you've never heard Arti e, with how long you've been on this site!
It's particularly one of my favorites, though people have mixed views on the drumming. Some say overbearing, some say frantic (in a good way).

There's quite a few I can think of, here are some 70's bands..
Anamorphose - Palimpseste (There's only one album from these guys, superb fusion with varied instrumentation and some high energy playing) Atila - Reviure (This is about 95% instrumental so I think it qualifies, this is excellent spanish prog) Bella Band - S/T (Italian band with one album, awesome fusion) Bo Hansson - Anything by this Swedish artist, maybe go with Attic thoughts. A beautiful 70's warm fuzzed sounding instrumental prog Bubu - S/T (Again about maybe 90% instrumental but this shouldn't be missed by anyone, this is wild stuff) Clearlight - Clearlight Symphony (Beautiful french instrumental symphonic album) Dzyan - Electric Silence (An instrumental album on the Krautrock side with eastern/Indian influences) Eider Stellaire - S/T (Instrumental Zehul album, if you like that kind of prog) Goblin - Roller (Great Italian band with many albums, I'm not sure how many of them are instrumental but this is great) Happy The Man - Their two first albums are high caliber fusion Jean Paul Prat - Masal (A french masterpiece) National Health - Of Queues And Cures (One of the best fusion bands) Rahmann S/T (A unique fusion with zehul and arabic influences, great stuff) Secret Oyster - Straight to the krankenhaus Terpandre - S/T (This is a beauty! It's symphonic and not fusion, very recommended) Wapassou - La Messe En Re Mineur (One 40 minutes track, beautiful warm sounding prog)
And here are some more modern instrumental bands
Djam Karet - The Devouring Barracuda Triangle - Electro Shock Therapy Setna - Cycle I Siddhartha - A Trip To Innerself Spoke Of Shadows - S/T Il Berlione - S/T

yeah...you'd think I would have heard of it by now being an old fart and on PA for over 5 years now... it just goes to show that there is always something out there to discover.

Lot of good mentions up there already.......I would add 'Finnforest' and 'Ain Soph' to the list of nice instrumental things. 'Kenso' is nice also but I think they were mentioned. I'm a fan of RTF and my favorite is 'Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy'.
Also no one mentioned 'Hot Rats'by Zappa and '6 Wives' by Wakeman. If you like fusion hard edged prog I would recommend both 'Liquid Tension Experiment albums.

I prefer Niacin. LTE gets old kind of fast. Jordan Rudess' prog covers album The Road Home is another good one.

Niacin is a good album.....I also like that one by Bruford and Levin.....Upper Extremeties, and the one with Torn and Bozzio...Polytown. So many good fusion things out there .

I really like Penguin Cafe Orchestra's self-titled album. What I like even more is Gryphon's Red Queen To Gryphon Three! This album makes me very happy!

A recent one I've enjoyed that last few weeks is Anima Morte. Another one I don't think anyone mentioned: Ozric Tentacles.

 Aurora was an instrumental jazz/fusion band from Texas heavily featuring violin and lead guitar. The album was recorded in 1977 but not released on CD until 1999. It is very hard to find copies but downloads are available. The band name was taken from Jean-Luc Ponty's album and the violinist credits Ponty as his main inspiration while the lead guitarist credits Larry Coryell. The full album can be heard on YouTube.

I know Ponty's music well, so the inspiration is obvious. Thanks for sharing this!! Another album that if not directly recommended, I'd have to stumble upon it randomly years later.
Off-topic, but I've always loved Cosmic Messenger from Ponty. Recently, it's been the album from him that stuck with me the most. The spacey textures are always fun.

there's never a bad time to play Red Queen to Gryphon Three And Sagichim, thanks for taking the time to compile what you find suitable to recommend. I actually like the Symphonic side of Finch/Arti more than the jazz-fusion. The albums really soar. So I'll be spending much time exploring these albums
