Once upon a time, in the 1970s if I recall, while prog was still a genre that actually sold albums, metal hadn't been invented yet and punk was a type of music only played at seedy New York bars by unwashed boys with bad dental hygiene and girls with hairy armpits, there was this thing called hard rock.
 
Now, much of this sort of music was simply four chords, shrieking vocals and a cloud of dust (whether caused by large groups of teens smoking pot or by stage fog machines is neither here nor there); however, there were certainly groups that rose above the flotsam and jetsam, and, standing atop the detritus like rock deities flailing at Strats and Les Pauls, actually recorded some damned good music.
 
And even here some talk reverently of hard rock luminaries like Zeppelin, The Who and Sabbath, but let us look further afield and recognize others from this genre that encompassed everything from the progressively hard Jethro Tull to the flagrantly loud Judas Priest. What are your favorite songs from this wide-ranging category?

Fantastic song from a fantastic album! Glenn Hughes is probably my favourite male vocalist, and I have been lucky to see him live twice in the past few years. The version of this song on the first Black Country Communion album is also worthy of note. Pity the band bit the dust after a mere three albums.

To remain with the Deep Purple "family", Whitesnake's pre-hair-metal albums also deserve some love. Live...In the Heart of the City is a smokin' live album.

Just finished listening to the BCC version of Medusa...I have always liked Hughes work...too bad BCC folded as him and Joe had a good thing going.

of course we all know this gentleman....from James Gang to the Eagles.....this is one of his solo things live in 1972....one of my all time favorite guitarists and songwriters. I was lucky enough to have seen him in 1970 with James Gang.

And then there's always...Aerosmith. Their first albums were actually really good. I saw them at a local ice arena in Allen Park, MI (1973 or 74?) before they made it big and lost any credibility they had:

I don't think it was reviled, but after losing Gillan then Blackmore it was definitely a shock and very different sounding. I have to say that there are some very good licks from Tommy Bolin ("Dealer" and the jazzy "This Time Around/Owed to G" particularly). A guitarist gone far too soon.

Yup, one of my favorite DP songs. Thumbs Up

Love that Aerosmith song too, always been one of my favorite songs from them. Love the 'Draw the Line' album too.
