I found his tome Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain (2007) to be a fascinating and illuminating digest of how and why music appeals to us - I think I will be revisiting that book over the next few days and looking into some of his other books when I can.

^ I've just ordered it online.  I have read some of his other works, and followed his writings in the New Yorker.  We can ill afford to loss people of his compassion and wisdom.

A damn shame, I've actually been thinking about reading The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat after hearing it quoted from so often on the blog Brainpickings.

I knew he was very sick, so his passing does not come as a surprise, but it's still a great loss. A few weeks ago I read one of his articles on the New York Times - about the Sabbath and the importance of taking time off, so very well written and full of wisdom. So sad to think such a man has left us, and so many nasty characters stick around.
