If English will become the most spoken language in fifty years, what will be second in terms of numbers of speakers?

English first I would say in terms of the amount of people who can speak this language Second would be Spanish And third would be Mandarin due to the amount of population. My statistics are not researched, it's only my assumption

I'd say Mandarin will always be in the top two, purely (as Kati said) because of the sheer amount of speakers. China's population is always growing, too. Plus, more and more foreign people are starting to pick it up to prepare for business opportunities, that kind of stuff...I'd say that if English ever takes over as #1 for sure, it'd then be Chinese #2 and then most likely Spanish #3.

SaltyJon! Mhwoaaahhxxx!!!! Yes indeedy! However if we think of the amount of people in total that do speak English in around the world even if it's not their mother language, English beats Mandarin. Big hug to you too

Ya that's true. It's interesting in a way to think of language as a...virus of some sort, and watching the various strains spreading out around the world, and cultural implications and necessity make some of the language viruses much harder for a person's language immune system to ward off...from that viewpoint, English is probably the worst virus the world has ever seen. Who knows, maybe someday we'll work out some truly universal form of language, not indigenous to any specific race or culture, that can take the place of any specific culture's as the "global language," that way we could remove the possibility of any sort of cultural jealousy or prejudice based on language. I vote music! Big hugs back

You'd imagine that with his username, he'd have known that!!! especially that there is nothing that specifies that English is the USA's official or legal language ========================= Flemish will master the world in 50 years.... if you listen to some "Belgian" politicians anyways...

Or not.
C is becoming a dead language like Pascal, Fortran, Cobol and Basic, unless you count C++, C# and Objective-C as being C (which they are not).
Java is more widely used and popular. Python, Ruby, Javascript, PHP and SQL also give C a run for its money with Apple's Swift fast catching up.

I know it's not widely used professionally (I don't remember the last time I coded in C), but I presume a lot of developers know a thing or two of it... at least it's widely taught as an introductory language here. That's the impression I have, but who know's how it will be like in 50 years, everything is constantly changing!
