Hello everyone :)
Quick question here:
Why is Iron Maiden listed here on ProgArchives? Are they prog or prog related, really?
I am not a fan of this band, to me they are not prog. however I know little about them thus cannot conclude if they do or not belong here.  Could anyone please suggest me a track that might be considered prog or prog related?
Alice Cooper to me is no comparison to Iron Maiden, Cooper is more progressive and he is not listed here on PA I think, or is he?

...are some of the ones I'd pick. There are others.

It's just as much about their influence though, at least as I regard it, and then on progressive metal in particular. They've also had a tendency to do a bit more with their material in terms of both structure and arrangements than most other metal bands. If not always proggy then at minimum sophisticated. Much more than Alice Cooper, who tends to stick to the same pace, rhythm and key arrangements throughout each song to a much greater extent, and he isn't overly fond of sophisticated arrangements either the good Mr. Furnier.

Kati, Iron Maiden are in Prog Related, which means they are not considered prog. You've been here long enough to know that. Let's not open this can of worms again, as I don't have fond memories of the flak I got when I added them in 2007 (including personal insults). As to not being a fan, I am not a fan of many of the bands that are on the PA database, but I don't question their right to be here.

Regarding your query about prog or prog-related IM tracks, their later output is chock full of them, though many people generally bring Seventh Son of a Seventh Son as an example of their prog leanings. Anyway, since you are also a PE member, there is a thread there on IM's latest album (a double CD set), in which the words "prog" or "proggy" are mentioned quite often.

Edit: ninja'd by OlavWink.

Raff don't get your knickers twisted here, you always portray yourself as an expert and most excellent in dialogue, here I said and quote "Why is Iron Maiden listed here on ProgArchives? Are they prog or prog related, really?"
Yes I have been here long enough and whatever puzzles me, I will question and will be open to discussion too and at times can change my mind/perception too, I might lack at times the knowledge compared to most of you inc. you Raff this makes me no less than you and it will equally not stop me from being inquisitive!

There's nothing wrong with the question except the fact that it was asked and discussed over and over.

Meltdowner,
I have not seen any discussion about this on PA. forum topics. Otherwise I would not ask this question if I had seen the info or topic discussion.
Hugs,

^ Search "iron maiden prog" and you'll see a lot of topics. The most recent one is about them being considered Prog Metal instead Tongue

Like so many of the questions and topics here........hell if it weren't for repeated points we might not have anything to talk about here.

Regarding Kati's most excellent question.....I don't consider them prog either but as Raff pointed out they are here as prog related...like The Who and Zep.

I recently tried once again to get into them and listened to Seventh Son and Powerslave and they just don't click for me.....their music and stage presence make me think of Spinal Tap. Sorry...I don't mean to be derogatory but there it is.

Love that performance Smile Especially when Hammill's done with his singing and he just walks away with his drink. Classy.

I suspect that Bruce's a bit over the top vocals will have a lot to say there. On a more theoretical level, I think you will find the opening 6 minutes of their grand new epic - third video I posted earlier in the thread - to be a tad intriguing. At least as I experience that opening third, it contains a hell of a lot of small, subtle nods in the direction of Jethro Tull, mainly by way of piano and guitar details.

Not that I think you'll like the song per se, but those details might just be of interest. It's fairly well known that Iron Maiden like Jethro Tull, and Bruce have also cooperated with Ian Anderson on occasion.

As documented here:

Yes...the first few minutes (above video of Clouds) does have a bit of a Tull influenced thing going on....and the whole song itself is ok...but for me it's just very basic; and while that's not necessarily a bad thing ( I like many 'basic' sounding prog bands) it makes what they do just a bit too mediocre for me.

Great question Kati! You go girl!  Hug It seems unfair to me that Iron Maiden is listed as prog related but Spinal Tap is not. Wtf? LOL
