I am a big fan of all of these, but the first couple of albums are my faves. None of the studio releases though can match the soulfull power of Lotus ie the best thing Santana ever did. Oh and I've got a soft spot for Moonflower. One of the first cds I ever bought.

I think I had Moonflower first, loved it but grew to like the earlier stuff more, esp. Caravanserai. Surprisingly never got the first three albums until recently. I voted for Lotus - that album blew me away, love the fact that it's mostly instrumental, plus first heard it when I borrowed my friend's vinyl and was blown away by the packaging.
But in hindsight, maybe I should have voted for Borboletta...

Caravanserai, by a fair margin.
Dig me...But don't...Bury me I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.
^ I haven't listened to Lotus in quite awhile since I don't like messing with the unfolding cover.
I probably should order the CD so I don't have to worry about that.
Heh...I bought my cd copy some 15-20 years ago and just last year got my hands on a vinyl copy.
In any case; may not be a bad idea to spin the ol' vinyl until you find the cd. It is without a doubt the release where Santana, and band, is at his most progressive. Just the guitar solos on this thing blast you straight through the room. Plus, there are tons of them out there at an affordable price (or maybe that's just in Denmark? I've seen them priced ridiculously low here).

Also a small shoutout to the Woodstock performance - the gig that literally made Santana.......and for good reason too.
I've always been fond of the small stories leading up to Woodstock, the organisers' but also the bands' - and the fact that someone had given Carlos his first ever tab of acid just before the gig, is one of those small pieces of information that sweetens this 1969 polaroid picture.
By the time of Soul Sacrifice he thought his guitar had turned into a snake and the best thing is that you can see it in the footage (...and while we're at it; take a look at his face! Rodent behaviour if I've ever seen such a thing.)
To me personally this results in a much more aggressive and choppy sounding Santana - yet at the same time he feels fragile and about to burst with tenderness at any moment - almost like an open nerve.
Either way, this is a brilliant performance - one that extends to all the players - including a young 17 year old Mike Shrieve behind the drum kit.

I would've thought the jazz connoisseur in you would've voted for it over Caravanserai. I mean come onThe tracks from that album are 10 times better on Lotus!
