Octopus is GG's best LP in my opinion.

I voted for it but can't believe GG won---thought VDGG would win everything on this site.

Nice to see Gentle Giant getting a little love.

I have got the perception that GG always get's more than just a little love on this site (as well as VDGG), which I believe they deserve... well, GG may be hit or miss for me, but they did work hard to become the prog legends they are.

^ True-- people have actually heard of Gentle Giant which is amazing for a second tier prog band.
Artist preference seems to go in waves around here. When I arrived in '06, the Vanders were the tragically hip band to like, then Magma had a big period as did Avant-garde, Marillion, and RPI .

Well, very true artist preference seems to shift with the wind from one day to the next here - I love both of these great albums equally making it rather difficult to pick one over the other - even down to their beautiful album covers (vinyl) - I have the Octopus original die-cut Jar album cover- But today (maybe its my mood, or the change of weather), I'm picking Octopus! I think it was The Advent of Panurge that did it...

I like the vocals with both GG and VdGG. |
Personally, I could imagine 70s prog without GG vocals, but without VdGG i.e. Hammill's vocals, that picture of 70s prog never could be complete. |
Nor would GG's vocals IMHO... the vocals on Acquiring The Taste for instance There are some wonderful harmony vocals on that one. In general... GG had some harsh sounding, but also some delicate vocals.
But yes, VdGG... the vocals are extremely important in the music. True... Essential to the 1970's. |
And also that Hammill's poetry is really great.

Oh no I'm tragically unhip - digging Magma (and avant-garde) as we were all still living in 2006
