For me, it is only at Animals that they shed their awkward psychedelic roots.

I agree. Not clear to me what is intended by awkward. I said when Syd left because he was awkward as an individual. Also, I think there may be something awkward about the lack of focus in the song writing in terms of the playful pop songs on the one hand (e.g. Bike) and the extended pieces on the other (e.g. Interstellar Overdive). That trouble perhaps remained to one degree or another in Saucerful of Secrets and maybe a little onward. I think PF certainly got much better with crossing over and reconciling their more accessible songs with their more "out there" extended pieces by the time of DSOTM and WYWH.

Just noting that this is under Just For Fun. Am I missing some humour here?
