Moths might possibly be the finest track Tull ever released but, after much thought, I'm going with Renaissance. There are no highlights quite as stellar as Moths, but there's nothing on it I don't like a lot.
And No Lullaby is not to my taste. |
yeah "No Lullabye", that was the one I didn't like I really enjoyed "Rover" too. If you've ever heard the Morrigan, I think they took a lot of influence from JT, especially the Heavy Horses album

I wasn't planning on a part 6. I left this one for last because it's the only one that I was pretty sure would be taken by the "other" band. Is there another BIG prog name that released a studio album in 1978? I guess we could do Moody Blues "Octave" but I'm pretty sure Renaissance would take that poll. KC and Floyd didn't release anything that year. I guess we could do other bands of similar ilk (ie-symphonic or folk oriented) that released albums that year. Stay tuned!

A Song for all Seasons for me - opening Out, Day of the Dreamer, Northern lights and the title track make this their last really strong album (IMHO)
I've never quite understood the love for HH or SFTW - both have some pleasant tracks on but they don't get anywhere near the peaks of TAAB, LITP, APP and MITG.

I'll add 2 other tracks that I think are great on ASFAS - "Closer than Yesterday", a lovely ballad with multitracked Annie's on the chorus and mellotron flute; and "Kindness at the End", that is written, sung and almost entirely played by Jon Camp. A superb power ballad that resonated strongly with my young heart at the time, and always will. I also like "Back Home ONce Again", which I just realized has the same opening line as "Carpet of the Sun" - "Come along with me", or something to that effect. The only song I don't like is "She is Love", which I think could have been done better - it's almost like they rushed it through - but at least it almost passes by without notice.
Re Tull, I enjoy both of those folk albums alot but still would tend to go for other prog folk bands like the aforementioned Steeleye Span, Horslips, Strawbs, and others like Lindisfarne, Morrigan, Moving Hearts. Still, I respect Ian Anderson for being willing to try new things, which made them (along with Renaissance) one of the few long running prog bands that still put out a quality release in 1978.

just kidding! I need to listen to and review APP, TOTRARTYTD and Stormwatch, then I'll be done with the 70s. My initial opinion is not great, but of course I'll be fair!

I think some (2 or 3) votes of 10 votes (Renaissance have 10 votes this time) are not Votes for ASFAS. These "Voters !" don't like (hate is better word!) JT and vote to Renaissance. You can see this "HATE" clearly in their comments . Perhaps some of them didn't listen ASFAS from start to end. Fortunately Number of JT votes is very bigger (25 to 10) than Renaissance in this poll and they can't impress or change poll's result.

Not the best Renaissance album but usually if I have to choose between Renaissance and Tull I go for the first, unless it's Aqualung that's in my own top 10.
