Topic: Squire's best .... Posted: November 27 2015 at 08:23 |
one thing that I've noticed as I've introduced younger bassists to Chris Squire over the years (umm.. beyond Roundabout) is these two songs top.. by far.. the WTF reactions of other bassists. So which one for one, bassist or not, represents the peak of his creative and melodic stylings...

Good poll Micky. It's a tough one because the envelope filter on Freedom is brilliant but I have to go for Soundchaser for the crazy ending.

I would vote Silent Wings. That was more Squire being .. Squire. He alone made that song what it was. Soundchaster gets the WTF was the whole ensamble of which Squire was a part of. Brilliant as his playing was.

Sound Chaser, is a top ten song for me. Everything is in it's right place and has every quality that I love in a song. A memorable start that comes in randomly in the middle, the keys and the drums going absolutely ham, cryptic lyrics, a guitar solo, a complex song, but something you could still jam out to, and most importantly, the bass, which feels more like the lead vocals, then the actual vocals. 100/100, a masterpiece.

For creative melodic styling, I have to go with On the Silent Wings of Freedom. Sound Chaser falls more into the category of power and speed to my ears, and is highly impressive for its technique. Both are great examples of what Squire was capable of.

Soundchaser I guess, but both are really good examples of Chris's amazing bass playing style.

Soundchaser for me. Chris' bass work on Tormato saves the album IMO.

well said.. pretty much mirrors what I think. Power, speed, technique and all that sh*t. VERY impressive but hardly unique...but what separates Squire is his creativity and ear for melody. No wonder his solo album was as good as it was. That album wasn't about speed, technique or power but writing great melodies with the bass as the primary melodic instrument...and always saw Silent Wings as perhaps as his shining moment in that with Yes. sh*t man.. he made that a killer song even with all that Wakeman did to ruin it.

Out of these two? Sound Chaser.
His best grooves are found on Close to The Edge and Siberian Khatru, however.

From the list I prefer On the Silent Winds of Freedom, even though Soundchaser is more of a technical blast. Lots of great examples elsewhere from the classic period. Always loved the groove on Siberian Khatru.

While Sound Chaser is more of an abstract bass virtuoso performance, I voted Silent Wings because it shows Squiers' chops integrated into a more structured song (similar to the bass solo in Ritual). This does a better job of demonstrating how a bassist can leave the expected "hold down the bottom" role and simply "take over" a piece driving both the bottom and the lead melody at the same time...the man was awesome

^ yep it was very much a throw back to the early days when Squire ruled.. when Howe and Wakeman came.. he did step back. On Silent Wings. .the only redeeming factor to that song for neither Howe nor Wakeman did much of note on this...other than Squire doing what he did on the first albums and singlehandedly making it supremely kickass....is what I might consider Jon's best vocal performance. The hairs literally stand up on my arms everytime I hear him sings...' On the dream of our love eternal. PERFECT.. heavenly.
Speaking of... don't believe I've ever seen a poll for what the heads here think Jon's best was...

^ Ya, that would be an interesting poll...don't think I've ever seen one about Jon
As far as Tormato in general, I know it's generally considered a poor album on PA, but I like it more than any post 70's Yes album because Squier is just so out front and in your face. I think it's a fantastic Squier showcase with lots of very cool bass work and I especially like how he subtly changed his sound by adding the chorus pedal
