Topic: Fat Old Black Hole Sun Posted: December 19 2015 at 11:02 |
Is it just me or is there a connection between Pink Floyd's "Fat Old Sun" and Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun"? The songs, despite all differences in style, seem structurally similar (chord progressions and all that jazz) to me, sort of like they would probably mash up well.

The following quote is from the Trouser Press Record Guide, which trashed the first few Soundgarden albums: "The shocking development on Superunknown [...] is "Black Hole Sun", an honest-to-god psychedelic pop song, and a stunningly good one at that."
And Pink Floyd of course started out doing psychedelic pop songs. Not sure how they'd sound mashed up, but hey, if you can do it, more power to ya.

Well, the Floyd song is basically G C D F with a chorus of C Bm Am Dm Gm, as I recall playing it. I believe the Soundgarden song is E G D C#m C B with a slightly different chorus line. Other than the word "Sun" in the songs, I don't see much of a similarity.

"Fat Old Sun" sounds like Lynyrd Skynyrd's ''Free Bird'' to me...
