Over the past two months, 29 users have submitted lists of their favourite albums of all time,

totaling 3990 entries,

consisting of 2374 unique albums

by 1379 unique artists.

To these albums 282359 points have been awarded, and over the next week or two, we're going to find out where those points have fallen, answering the question: what is the Progarchives Forum's favourite album of all time for 2015/16??

Get.

Hyped.

(Except sublime220, who is probably already hyped enough.)

Before you all flood the topic with anticipation, I've also got something to say on the subject of how the points will be calculated. It'll be a little different to previous occasions on this board, when the system employed was #1 = 200pts, #2 = 199pts and so on, because experience with this kind of thing on other boards has suggested that that's not the best way to do it and here's an example of why:

Imagine you have five people submitting lists. Four of them vote #1 Shannon Noll's 'That's What I'm Talking About' , while all five vote for T. Swizzle's '1989' at #30. If we're trying to determine which albums are the collective favourites of the five surely Shazza, with near-unanimous #1s, should place higher than Taylor? Nope. Taylor gets 5 x 170 = 850, while Shannon gets 4 x 200 = 800, and is robbed of his glory again, just like on Australian Idol.
The point is, with the above method the points awarded stay so high for so long, and decrease so slowly, that the positioning of albums in the lists doesn't really matter that much- what matters is just how many times they've been listed at least somewhere; ie emphasising albums that are at least liked by the vast majority over people's favourites. The solution to this, as employed by other boards I've been to, is to apply a curve such that the points given drops off more quickly at the top of the rankings, giving the top more weight- in our case, such that #50, our minimum number of entries for a list, receives about 100 points instead of 150, and continues on from there.

Now, before you complain, I actually tested all this out with the data from one of the previous tournaments prior to beginning this one, and it doesn't actually make all that much difference- albums might be shifted around a bit, but largely remain around the same ranking (and, in fact, the top 10 of this tournament is identical either way...), which really suggests that what the vast majority of us like and what many of us rank highly are largely the same. But it makes me feel better, and will make things slightly more accurate and more interesting. Feel free to ask questions if you have any.

Iappreciate your explanation of the methodology.  Most of us are probably geeky enough to get it.

So I'd think that a single nomination can get an album in the top 400 - I'm pretty sure I was the only one who had Astor Piazzolla - New Tango, Zero Hour on my list, at rank  3, and that gave it rank 385 overall.

Comsat Angels - Waiting for a Miracle appeared on one other list apart from mine, I think on both lists somewhere between 30 and 70, and that brings it to rank 323.

Just to get a feel for how much it takes...

Thanks a lot for the work!

The 200 point mark was reached at #358-352, so everything after that obviously requires at least two votes; but most of the albums before it in the top 400 have more than one vote as well (since the ones that don't have to have been ranked #4 or higher to make it so far).

Dean was the other user who voted for Waiting for a Miracle, and the ranks were 32 and 58, so spot on.

Love how the list is looking so far. Very eclectic! It's also very amusing to see where albums rank exclusively because of how I rated them. i.e. Rayuela, any southern rock album LOL

Thanks for undertaking this Kazza3 and I highly anticipate the top 300!

Let's begin. The comparisons on the right are to the last tournament in 2009- seeing as I only have access to the top 400 of that tournament, 'unlisted' means the album didn't appear in that 400 (and has effectively risen by a whole bunch). Also noted are albums released since entries closed for that competition (March 2009). The rankings are pretty jumpy this far down the list, where a single vote could drastically change an album's position, but will get less so as we go on.

Right, I knew I'd forgotten something. Obviously to compile the list I had to sort through everything like spelling errors, inclusion of a 'the' prefix, acronyms, etc, so that points for an album weren't split and so on, and I thought I'd done that thoroughly. While writing out 300-250 I discovered a couple of errors that I'd missed, where artists had done albums by the same name and the points had been added together. So by fixing that, everything behind them was bumped up a few ranks, and I had forgotten to edit the teaser. Sorry!

I think I was the only one who included Tracy Chapman's self-titled first album on my list, and it made the top 400. It was 22 on my list, so pretty high up.

So I'd think that a single nomination can get an album in the top 400 - I'm pretty sure I was the only one who had Astor Piazzolla - New Tango, Zero Hour on my list, at rank  3, and that gave it rank 385 overall.
