Topic: Which Prog band sounds the same to you. Posted: February 07 2016 at 11:53 |
What Prog band or artist do you find bland , boring , and just doing the same thing . Remember that this is just opinion . For me its Dream Theater ( after Metropolice Pt 2 ) .

IQ has for the last 20+ years made the same album ie Ever. It's never bad though but getting a tad dull imo.

Without hearing all of it, I'm going to assume that at least 30% of the music listed in the PA database is complete sh*t. About 10-25% is OMG Wow...holy poop on a stick! The rest falls somewhere in between.

Bland and boring......too many to mention ....but as far as sounding the same....Flower Kings for me. I stopped buying their albums a long time ago because they just kept rewriting the same songs imo. Guldbamsen mentioned IQ....they have also been writing in the same style for a long time though for me the last 3 are better than the earlier ones .

There are many - I saw Dream Theatre in 2011 and they bored us and we left early (most boring band since I had the misfortune to see Dire Straits - made worse by their evident 'self importance' i.e. unneccesary giant drumkit); but a lot of new-er prog bands seem formulaic to me. Rush (Power Windows tour) was nearly as bad as DT and I have been never tempted to see them again since. This is all very subjective as I know people who love both bands and think they can do no wrong so they want more of the 'same'...

Ozric Tentacles come to my mind. Even though there is an obvious "sameness" from album to album to album, etc., I still find their music an enjoyable listen.

I would agree, although they tend to be more 'samey' live!

Anglagard albums (which I never understand why so higly rated here) sound the same to me. But I do have to give another spin perhaps.

It's true. If you have one album, you can have a pretty good idea what's in the other albums, but as you said yourself, they're still enjoyable. There are certain things, like (good) pizza and (good) ice cream, that I can eat over and over again. Not the approved of Prog attitude, but so what.

I'd throw in Pendragon a case in point.

Ozrics & Aranis spring to mind. Though I haven't listened to enough neo to be able to offer an opinion but my prejudice world view would say IQ, Marillion. Magma have been recycling the same themes for decades but man they are good themes. Alamaailman Vasarat certainly have a patented sound.

I don't have many Hawkwind albums, but struggle to tell one track from another on the ones I have. Then again perhaps I have just brought the wrong albums?

Neither "officially" prog (as in "not on PA"), nor always the same. You don't know that much of them, do you? They have developed quite a bit over the years, but are still uncompromising.

Hawkwind have distinct periods of their history where they sound radically different from each other, within each of those eras they do tend to have a similar sound if you're not a fan and have repeatedly listened to the albums. I'm no expert but of what I know
1 - Hurry On Sundown - Folky psych 2 - In Search Of Space to Warrior On The Edge Of Time - full blow space psyche rock, their best period IMHO 3 - Astounding Sounds to PXR5 - more punky and upbeat with focus on Calvert vocals & lyrics 4 - Levitation onward - got heavier and more metalish, this is where I stopped buying.

MESHUGGAH tend to sound samey from album to album, though they always add a little twist to approach album to album.
