Thought this could be a funny yet slightly perverse idea for a thread LOL

Italy - Fun fact no. 1

If you refuel at an Italian petrol station, you will pay a number of excises on each litre of fuel: you will be delighted to know that through these taxes you will help fund the colonial war against the Ethiopian Empire, which ended in 1936.   Tongue

Just out of principle, when in Italy I will rely on public transportation so I won't be called an imperialist.

Nil novo sub sole. We have a similar thing in the Netherlands: het kwartje van Kok, an additional excise on gasoline as a compensation for economic stagnation. The measure was taken in 1991 and said to be temporary. But they never abolished it until this day...

The median home value in Detroit is $6,600 USD.  The median value for the rest of the country is $224,100.

Bread is a staple food and cannot be taxed.

BUT  in a bakery a single tart is taxed at the 13% filthy Canadian HST but anything over the quantity of six is not subject.

It's a fair point--  I know someone who plans to buy and renovate in his native Detroit and since he's doing most of the work, he could end up with property that will increase in value.  Or not.  But he knows the city and culture and it could be the best buy he's ever made.  I guess we'll see.

Mike Ilitch is building an entertainment district downtown and Dan Gilbert is buying every commercial building in town and has implemented some pretty high security around his buildings.  For the first time in years, there appears to be a non-corrupt mayor...sadly he will probably leave to run for governor in a couple of years.  The city is ripe for a revival...it is happening in some areas, but other areas will take a long time and a military invasion before they can be improved.

Australia - Non-Fun fact no. 1

Here in Australia we have a "Liberal" political party which is not liberal as such and never really was since it's emergence in the 1940's (it's arguably drifted further away from any perceived centre as time has gone on). And in the last federal election a "Liberal Democrat" party emerged that shares more principles with radical libertarians than with (say) anything Nick Clegg's party might stand for in the UK.

I'm sure there's other items of "horrible trivia" about Australia - though I tend to think more in terms of my State (South Australia) rather than the entire country - after all, we've only been a federation since 1901, these things take time...

I thought that was pretty bad - but I am shocked on investigation to find that, according to the ABS, the "waste generated per person in Australia in 2006/2007" (which would seem to be equivalent) is 12 pounds per day (2,100kg per person per year), that had increased from 1200kg per person per year just 10 years before... That is truly horrible

Portland Oregon's name was decided with a coin toss to decide whether to name the place after Portland, Maine or Boston, Massachusetts. The then small community was initially known as "The Clearing" because of the many trees were cut for development. In 1843, Asa Lovejoy of Boston, Massachusetts purchased half of the 640-acre area for 25 cents and later Francis W. Pettygrove of Portland, Maine purchased the other half. Both Pettygrove and Lovejoy wished to rename "The Clearing" after their respective hometowns. In 1845 this controversy was settled with a coin toss which Pettygrove won in a series of two out of three tosses, thereby naming the community 'Portland'. The coin used for this decision, now known as the Portland Penny, is on display in the headquarters of the Oregon Historical Society.

It's fun watching people run-down their countries.

The land of Issac Newton, Charles Darwin, James Clarke Maxwell, Marie Stopes, Elziabeth Fry, William Shakespere, Geoffrey Chaucer, John Milton, William Blake, Jane Austen, J.R.R. Tolkien, John Locke, Alexander Graeme Bell, Frank Wittle, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Charles Babbage, Ada Lovelace, Charlie Chapplin and of course Mary Poppins is practically perfect in every way.
