I saw Status Quo supporting Queen at St James Park in Newcastle in '86, they were outstanding, really party feel.

Unfortunately I only had a couple opf years in my life where I could regularly attend prog concerts. That was  while living in Germany. However my first Prog (related) concert happened on South African soil: 1994, I saw Jethro Tull performing in Cape Town.

Here my other prog  concerts. Not sure anymore about the order:

Dream Theater, Kansas, Steve Hackett, Yes, Rush, Arena, Asia, Saga, Porcupine Tree, Van der Graaf Generator, Fish

Accept - Hammersmith London (1986)
Hawkwind - Reading Majestic (UK) (1986)
It Bites - Reading Majestic (1987)
Vow Wow - Reading Majestic (1988)
Rush - Wembley (London) - (1988)
AC/DC - Wembley - (1988)

New Model Army - Reading university (1989)
The Cure - Wembley (1989)

Not much prog in there. Since then I've seen Rush three more times, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Spocks Beard, Pendragon, IQ, Opeth, Dream Theater, ELP and countless other non prog bands...REM, U2, Depeche mode, Cocteau Twins, Moby, The Mission, Sisters of mercy, Balam & the angel, Ozric Tentacles, The Orb, Cinematic Orchestra...and more.....

Grateful Dead - Spring tour 1983....Meadowlands, NJ - 2 nights; New York - 2 nights; Saratoga; Philly
Grateful Dead - Fall tour 1983.....New York - 2 nights; Hartford; Philly - 2 nights

First non-Dead show - David Bowie, Hershey Park 1983....Serious Moonglight Tour

Used to follow the Dead all summer until summer 1986....went to a show in D.C.; showed up in Philly the next day for the show but poor Jerry had fallen into a coma due to an untreated abscessed tooth (and a terrible heroin addiction).

I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

Not counting festivals:

J. Geils Band (1982)
Prince (1984)
Tina Turner (1985) (my grandmother and mother liked them so I went along)
The Tubes (1985) (opening band was Utopia)(I went with my brother)
Yes (1987) (Big Generator tour)
Rush (1987) (Hold Your Fire)
Yes (1988)
The Who (1989)
ABWH (Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe) (1989)
Yes (Union) (1991)

A few more:

Yes (Talk) (1994)
Al Dimeola and John Mclaughlin(some other dude also)(1989)
King Crimson (1995)

Unfortunately I missed Pink Floyd in 1988. I had a ticket but sold it to a guy from school because I didn't want to go alone.

Also, unfortunately I only saw Genesis once but that wasn't until 2007 for the turn it on again tour. Also, only saw Jethro Tull once (2008).

This thread got me thinking! After a bit of research I think my first concerts were in 1976-78 and in this order:

Rainbow (Liverpool Empire)
Sutherland Brothers & Quiver (Chester ABC)
Genesis (Liverpool Empire)
Rush (Manchester Free Trade Hall)
Dire Straits (Chester College)
Thin Lizzy (Manchester Belle Vue)

My father worked shifts making getting evening lifts from home difficult and school studies took priority in 1978-79. Had to get by with local bands and Radio City's Great Easton Express in the evenings.

Travelled with a friend to see Led Zeppelin's 2nd night at Knebworth in 1979, just before going to University in September. As half my first year grant went on concert tickets at the Manchester Apollo in 1979-80 I've had a quick trawl through my old ticket collection to see the bands I saw. Looks like I averaged 1-2 bands a week (what a great time for classic/prog rock before the arenas took over from the theatres and student unions).

I know I saw the likes of Rory Gallagher, Rush, BJH, Strawbs, Jethro Tull, Peter Gabriel, Genesis, AC/DC, Wishbone Ash, Steve Hackett, along with Whitesnake, Gillan, Iron Maiden, UFO, Robin Trower, Van Halen, Rick Wakeman, Saxon, Budgie, Lindisfarne, Judie Tzuke, Pat Travers, Def Leppard, Magnum, Ozzy Osbourne, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Scorpians, Rainbow, Judas Priest, The Enid, Sammy Hagar, April Wine, Wild Horses, Climax Blues Band, Renaissance, Greg Lake etc. Reading Rock Festivals in 1980 and 1981 and Glastonbury that year too!

It explains why I had to live on salad cream and tomato purée on crackers on Sunday evenings before my weekly bank funds got boosted on a Monday - but at typically only £3 a ticket for top bands, it was not an extravagant outlay in hindsight. Looking back, I tended to lump hard rock/metal/prog together and only later did the genre thing stand out more to me. It was in the 80s that I realised I preferred prog more and listened to it more in preference to the hair rock bands that dominated at the time - with neo-prog a welcome revival after many of the greats lost their way somewhat.

A nostalgic trip down memory lane!

Deep Purple (1973, Machine Head)
Black Sabbath (1974 Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was out, but they played only 1 song from it)
Robin Trower w/Humble Pie (1975)
Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Foghat and The Outlaws (1976, Pontiac Silverdome)
Genesis (1976, Trick of the Tail)

Yes (1977, Going for the One)
Neil Young (1978, Rust Never Sleeps)

Hmmm...yeah, I am missing a few. Oh well.

A friend just reminded me we saw David Bowie in 1974. I must have really enjoyed it.

Wow, makes me realize I haven't been historically much of a concertgoer until the 2000's. Can't remember anything as a teen in 80's (tho there must have been something).

So, to the 90's: If I exclude Ray Charles (and other Jazz concerts: Wynton Marsalis; Dave Brubeck) my first was either Rush or Yes.

Yes was outdoors at Park City, UT, excellent concert!
Rush were on their Roll the Bones tour, SLC, UT.

2000's:

Yes (again) in Albuquerque, NM
Bela Fleck (twice in New Mexico)
Neil Young  (Albuquerque)

2010's:

Rush (again) in Albuquerque
Ian Anderson in Albuquerque
Blues Traveler in Portland, OR
Magma in Austin, TX

And went twice to Baja Prog (2013-14) in Mexicali Mexico (bands including Steve Hackett, Spock's Beard, Museo Rosenbach, Osanna, PFM, Galahad, Fish, 3 Friends (with members of Gentle Giant) and a bunch more.

(OK, I guess I'm past 10 now, but I'll also mention Psycho Las Vegas (last year), with Swans, Mastodon and Magma (again).
