The Arc Light Sessions specializes in symphonic progressive rock - a style of music that uses rock as a base and adds to that a tasty mixture of elements from classical, jazz and/or folk to create a new concoction. It has a strong following among people who appreciate high quality musicianship and sometimes indulges in longer than average songs. The ultimate goal is to create quality rather than aim at generating mass appeal.

For some, progressive rock is synonymous with progressive metal which leaves the more pastoral elements out of the repertoire of some groups. This style, favored by some, is not what The Arc Light Sessions is about. The music is also not about length for length's sake. The songs develop organically and contain musical passages where warranted but the intent is to have them fit thematically into each piece.

The Arc Light Sessions is not a touring band but instead a studio based project, which is another way of saying we have day jobs.  This project is ultimately about the love for creating music that keeps us working and developing new material and, using this format, allows for the contributions of different musicians when the spirit moves us.

The project is the brainchild of keyboardist and composer John Alarcon who released two previous offerings under the nameSynthology on the now defunct Fossil Records label.

If you enjoy what you hear on our YouTube page, consider purchasing the debut release entitled "Perchance to Dream" in order to support our creative efforts. We would do this for nothing because in the end, the need to produce art comes from the soul but if we can cover our costs we would be happy with that. Our desire as human beings to create and be appreciated has more value.

Hi: Heard it in Spotify.

1.- Blue: Nice and pompous, but a blend of everything, a very modern sound close to Neo

2.- Fools Gold: Neo and Crossover

3.- La Riviera Maya: Starts Symphonic and always remain in the borderline.

4.- In My Small World: Anything but Symphonic, a bit folksie a bit soft rock.

5.- The Carnival of Life: Shouts Neo Prog.

6.- A Road Less Travelled: Reminds me of Wendy Carlos

7.- Why We Were Here: Neo/Symphonic

8.- Those Glorious Times: Again shouts Neo Prog.

9.- Sahara: Neo/Symphonic

10.- Sooner or Later: Pure Neo Prog.

11.- .....All Fades to White: Prog....Yes......Symphonic.....I don't believe so

Anyway, I will send a PM to my teammates, but I listen more Neo Prog with that modern sounding keyboards.

Their reviews in their own points towards Neo Prog:

The album shows influences from neo prog. Bands like Arena or the early IQ are shining through the songs..." - Thorsten GuerntkeDURP.com

"Another good independent release from 2015, it will please in full those who like a more progressive light in the line of groups like Supertramp, Barclay James Harvest and The Moody Blues. Music filled with pianos, flute and guitar….great singer!" Cesar LanzariniRock Progressivo, Brazil

My opinion is Neo or Xover, but the team will decide.

Iván

The band's sound is a cross between Symphonic and Neo. A softer version of some Neo-Prog bands that use modern keyboards and heavier guitars. For the fact that the songs are not very complex and the sounds of the keys, i will vote for a move to Neo mostly based on the latest album who is less folky and symphonic than the first one.
Music is the refuge of souls ulcerated by happiness.

I think you should listen their first album to find the fit sub-gen. In this section , my opinion isn't important. I trust to team members and I wait for their decide!

Thanks Ivan for your analysis. I like this kind of comments and analysis because I learning more.

I have listened to a few of their songs now and I generally agree with the assessments of my fellow team members. I'm okey with sending them to Neo or to Crossover, they belong on PA for sure.

However, from the little I've heard so far I do not see why they are compared to Arena or IQ. The Barclay James Harvest comparison is closer.

More than Arena, has a bit of IQ and another bit of Magenta (Seven):

If rejected by Neo and Xover, we will gladly check again.

They claim to be Symphonic, but the reviews in their own page say:
