I honestly believe, close to the edge was a masterpiece ,I listened to the album back to front .It is or has to be the blueprint, for the progressive movement ,a rich collection of songs and collaboration's of excellent musicianship, everyone has the favorite yes album, close to the edge was mine.

Great album....I suppose it was Yes' masterpiece for sure. I watched an old interview with Bruford the other day (early 80's) he was touring with KC and some one interviewed him in New York I believe. He cited CTTE as their best work and why he left for KC since iho they would never do a better album. Some Yes fans think Relayer or TFTO are better , but not me.

Close to the Edge is indeed a masterpiece. If I prefer other Yes albums, it doesn't take anything away from CTTE, which is never short of brilliant and flawlessly executed.

Close To The Edge is my favourite Yes album, my favourite progressive album and my second favourite album of all time. Led Zeppelin IV beats it out by a millimeter with it's songs but as a cohesive album, CTTE wins. In my opinion, it is the peak of the musical art and nothing has ever beaten it or come close to it since '72.

It's my favourite Yes album too... though very close with Fragile. That's the line-up that really did the best the band could do, and they have never had such a strong line-up since (nor any album as strong as this ones).

pfffft Drama and Tormato any day of the week.
Ok maybe not, but I enjoy most Yes, "commercial" or "progressive". As for CTTE being a blueprint... that is the thing with progressive music/rock; if you have a formula or blueprint you have stopped being "progressive". Prog is dynamic by nature, it can not be defined by something so static as a blueprint.

CTTE is an excellent prog-rock album - it's not a blueprint to anything, just a great album. It has its influences and it has influenced others, but, as a previous poster pointed out, any type of blueprint takes away from the "progressive" nature of the music. The Monkees had a blueprint - the Beatles, are we saying that other bands took CTTE, dissected it and took away the genre of music we call "prog"? Bruford, man - Yes was never the same after he left.
