Naming a favorite singer would be like naming a favorite drop in an ocean.....far too broad a topic to narrow down. I will say that PG is my favorite Genesis vocalist.

By what criteria? By the objective standards used to decide what makes a "good" singer, I could name a dozen prog singers I'd rather hear. I've never read the original qoute, so I'm paraphrasing here. Even Gabriel says Collins is a "better singer".

I don't have a particular favourite, but I do like Gabriel. Amongst male vocalists, Robert Wyatt may not have great vocals, but I love his style.
I guess I do tend to favour female vocalists on the whole. Edda Dell'Orso, Brigitte Fontaine, Pascale Son of Cos and Catherine Ribeiro get special mention from me. |

NO. I never liked Peter Gabriel's voice. Oh, and in Genesis, Phil Collins was a far better vocalist IMO.

I tend to prefer Gabriels's vocals when he went "solo" to his vocals with Genesis (maybe I'm generalising too much). I prefer him to Collins due to the character in Gabriel's vocals (character often trumps technical ability to me, though I'd rather Trump have more technical ability and I don't like his character at all).

No. Peter Hammill is my favourite singer. Generally speaking, I focus on the music in preference to the lyrics, largely treating the singer as another instrument. But with Van der Graaf Generator, the lyrics and how they're sung is an extra dimension to the music that I generally don't get with other artists.
I should remark that I have a fondness for distorted vocals, for example "21st Century Schizoid Man". |
