While they cross many genres, they have similar roots to Anathema with Doom metal.  I think they fit nicely into Progressive Metal and can tour with Progressive Metal groups.  I do not know the reasoning for why they are not here, but I can tell you that if they are added, they will get many reviews based on their popularity with PA members.

This is probably the thirty-second time they've been suggested.  So good luck!
They do have a new album out soon, so I suppose its as good a time as any.

There is a reason they have been suggested so many times.  The readers of this site that listen to Progressive Metal, listen to Katatonia.  I am not saying that every metal act be added, but they clearly have connections at the very least.

I love Katatonia, but I don't think they are really progressive metal at all. I've always seen them as alternative metal in the vein of bands like 10 Years.

I don’t think they are alternative metal at all.  I think their layers of ambiance is quite progressive.  They progress the genre.

They are a bit Prog Metal but not Prog Metal enough to have ever reached a unanimous Yes vote from the prog metal team.

Personally I think they merit a Yes for the album 'Brave Murder Day' and the mathy/proggy riffing and rhythms in later albums,
but most of my buddies in the team feel their songwriting is too straightforward to be considered Prog Metal (which is a strong argument admitted)

The band posted this description of themselves on their Facebook post:

Katatonia, the Swedish purveyors of dark progressive rock/metal, who this week announced details of their eagerly awaited 10th studio album...

It is a shame that they are not listed here.

I'd say their newest album (Dead End Kings) is the most progressive they've ever gotten. Either way, I'd say they're only prog-related at most; they always struck me more as an alternative/doom metal band. However, with that said, I DO love the band. Last Fair Deal Gone Down is one of my favorite albums of all time. Smile

I hope to get that album next.  :)  Everyone says the same thing.  They should at least be prog related on this site.  I really do not care about how the site labels them.  People WANT to write reviews for their albums.

They don't stand a chance in prog related. This sub is only for bands that either influenced prog rock on a large scale or similarly made their mark on the genre. Katatonia can't claim either.

I'm gonna have to agree with Guldbamsen on this one. Katatonia have had a few prog elements here and there, but I just don't think it's enough. There have been a few bands I'm willing to fight for in terms of inclusion (such as Nevermore or X Japan), but Katatonia is not really one of them

Then again, Katatonia is certainly a better candidate than Mudvayne, who a few people have tried to get on the site before. That one's just comical

I´ve participated in many of the previous Katatonia discussions as I also believe they belong here, but there is a strong opposition against their additions here, so I´ve let it go. If you really want to write reviews of their albums you can always visit PAs sister site MMA (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/artist/katatonia/?ac=katato) where Katatonia is featured.

Well, it is probably not worth the fight.  As a prog fan, they fit into my tastes nicely.

There are many, many, many bands that do not feet in PA (Iron Maiden, 10CC for instance), yet they are here. So, Katatonia, especially their last albums have more closeness to many bands in the progressive side that are in the archives and fit, like Anathema, Opeth, etc. They claim themselves being prog, so why not giving them a try.

The rules for additon on PA is that once an artist has been rejected from a sub genre, they can´t be re-evaluated Again for the same sub genre until they release a new album, that the genre team feels is progressive enough to warrant their addition to the site. In the case of Katatonia, that would mean suggesting their addition on the merits of their yet to be released new album, when it comes out. It´s the only way in for Katatonia, and personally I doubt that the new album will be more "progressive" in nature than what they have put out in the past, and since the progressive metal team has not deemed their previous releases progressive enough for Katatonia to be added, I doubt they´ll be added this time around. But by all means keep the PMT busy WinkThumbs UpBig smile

Iron Maiden and 10CC are under prog-related, so I don't see a problem with that.
Both Anathema and Opeth are bit more experimental than Katatonia. I like Katatonia, but they could just be here under prog-related I guess (don't think anyone would do that as prog-related is already pretty controversial LOL)

Katatonia's stripped down Dethroned & Uncrowned is identical to Riverside's minimal metal: Love, Fear and the Time Machine.  Great song writing and excellent vocals on both, with mellow arrangements.
