It might be stupid to open up such a thread, but since I travel a lot and am crazy about spending my salary on cd's, I wanted to pick your brain on whether you guys know of any record stores in this region dedicated to progrock.
I share my time between Budapest and Krakow and nothing here or in between comes close to it (from what I have seen so far), as no record store would focus on one genre, which would be progrock. Berlin has some cool stores with such albums, probably Prague and Vienna also (though I have not had time to explore those much yet), but the only store really focusing on such music that I found so far was in Stockholm (on Gamla Stan). Anything else you know of?? p.s. and I do not mean online record stores :)

Last year I was in Budapest and found a fantastic music shop: Rózsavölgyi, around the corner from Szervita tér and next to a building with a famous Art Nouveau mosaic, all in the Belváros region. It's a great general music store--especially strong in classical music, but downstairs they house rock and other genres. I went in looking specifically for Hungarian prog and someone there on staff was immensely helpful. Bought a ton of CDs, including some great contemporary Hungarian folk music as well. Hope that helps.
I wasn't able to find a similar store in Prague (on either visit I've made there), but that doesn't mean there's not one to find. Plenty of classical music stores in Vienna (no surprise there), but I didn't spot any rock/prog ones with any ease. Good luck!

The best record store in Budapest is Rockdiszcont: http://rockdiszkont.hu/
No second hand items, but incomparable offer of Hungarian music (all genres, including prog) for the best prices. A good amount of international music as well. The best record store in Hungary I think.

What's the name of the place in Gamla Stan, Stockholm?
Any other recommendations for Stockholm? Great record stores in Oslo?

The one on Gamla Stan is this one: http://www.soundpollution.se/ It's a heavy prog/metal store spread over a sizeable shopfloor (add to it a spacious storage room also, from which the seller will dig up just whatever cd you need), particularly good in local bands. No second-hand cd's though and bloody expensive. Also loved Stockholms skivbörs that has amazing prices and a cool atmosphere. The others I visited in Stockholm (around 20 in total) were more of a letdown for me.

Warsaw, dang, if I remembered the name. Chmielna 20 street I think, near tha main big street. They have got a black and white logo with a turntable on it... Man, I found some real gems at a great price. Anyway, also nearby there is that store Art-Deco it is called I think. Also some great records there. Anyway, Warsaw downtown is full of record stores with progressive rock albums!

There's amazing prog-rock-themed store in Poznan, Poland, called FRIPP SKLEP - yes, as prog as it gets! Bought IQ's "Dark Matter" on vinyl there coupla years ago, and a shtload of other stuff this Spring, they literally have anything.
Another one is Prague's Polipet, not only vinyls&CDs, but also books and other stuff. More a punk/hardcore/stoner/DIY-thing, but a good selection of post-rock/post-metal and modern indie prog. Thanks a lot for Budapest' recommendations, we're often play there with my band, so I need to check those out Edited by Prog-jester - April 27 2016 at 13:37 |
