Topic: European Prog Championship Finals 2016 Posted: June 09 2016 at 06:17 |
England - the home of football - is deliberately excluded. This is a bit of fun on the eve of the European Championships (which may not resonate with US PA'ers). If it were to be a prog championship, who would lift the trophy in France this summer?

I'd probably go for Sweden since we've been harshly excluded, or maybe Poland since I've got them in the sweep at work.

I would go for Germany, France and Italy before I'd even consider voting for England.
As for the three and a final vote? Erm....if we're merely talking bands featured on PA, it's bound to end up with a country I never usually root for ie Germany. I have so many German releases in my collection it literally boggles the mind...and that is without owning a single Schlager album, which is something I am very proud of (music that is better described as muzak with an overpowering cheese factor to it).

Looking at the top 2016 releases I think Sweden and Italy are leading. Russia has iamthemorning and Roz Vitalis so it's a good outsider.

Since I know that Germany and Italy will be well represented, I'm giving my vote to the Magyars. There's a few especially cracking prog bands from that nation like Solaris.

Hard chose between Germany and Italy. A big rivalry in soccer, but both have great progressive bands.

Based upon the releases of recent years (this is 2016, isn't it? And the Tournament in France this summer is also based upon 2016 participants, n'est-ce pas?), of which the dominant nations in the PA polls have been Italy, Norway, Poland, Sweden, France, and Germany (in that order, in terms of high quality prog releases--according to the annual Top 100 polls), I'd have to give it to
Italy with Norway or Poland as the runner-up.

I've been enjoying a lot of music from France of late so that's my pick over the usual suspects in Germany, Sweden and Italy.

Tearjerking poll . The Netherlands have been excluded in favour of some minor countries from which only a few PA members may have heard a single album or a single track.
Nevertheless I checked my lists from the past five years. From the countries listed hear I choose Italy as the obvious winner (Sweden is second, Belgium is third).
Edit: One more note: If the Netherlands were included, they would not have my vote with four countries ranked higher.

I think because only nations that have qualified for Euro 2016 are included?
Sorry, this probably qualifies as rubbing salt in the wound.
FWIW I like the Netherlands music scene. My favourite current band would be Spinifex.

The Netherlands sadly, did fail to qualify for Euro 2016. They did reach the World Cup final in 74 when Focus were also at their height of their powers!

OK, I should have checked out Euro 2016 first. My mind is bent on prog rather than on football . It does not rub any salt in the wound .

... which they lost from Germany even though Tangerine Dream were just gaining momentum .

I think the poll would have been better if it had made clear whether we are talking about "all time contribution to prog" or the current prog music scene in each country, since it would yield quite different answers (and from this thread some people are taking it one way, some the other).
On the basis of current music scene I've voted France.

If we're talking about this summer, this year, then I voted for Sweden. If it was overall prog history... I'd have to go with Italy.

Sweden only kick off this evening against the Irish republic but already early favourites here. Prog wise, the country's pedigree in addition to recent prog offerings have put them there (to be truthful, this writer only really knows Samla Mammas Manna... )
