I gave a listen to several of these tracks nominated for the best songs of the year. Halfway through, after none of them really did anything for me, I gave up. Is this the best prog 2016 has to offer?...

I agree with you. None seem to interest me enough to consider it to be the best of the year.

I can't imagine any of these tracks are the next Roundabout, Starless, Comfortably Numb, Supper's Ready, Carry On Wayward Son, Aqualung, Spirit of the Radio, Tarkus...

I felt similarly until I came across Motorpsycho's Big Black Dog:

The Knifeworld tune ain't bad either, but I voted for this one.

I have not heard of a single one of these bands in the "Limelight" category. I must be dreadfully out of date.
Me neither
x3. Only half of them are on this site though so I don't feel so bad
Come on guys!! Everybody knows Circuline, Good Tiger, Kylver, The Aaron Clift Experiment, Lithium Dawn, Teramaze, The Anchoress, Tiger Moth Tales, Tiny Giant and Tom Slatter
I've heard of three myself but only checked out one, Tiger Moth Tales, which wasn't by bag.

I'll list the possible candidates for album of the year, in case there are some folks who are too lazy to follow links
Anderson/Stolt - Invention Of Knowledge
Between The Buried And Me - Coma Ecliptic
Big Big Train - Folklore
Dream Theater - The Asstonic
Haken - Affinity
Messenger - Threnodies
Purson - Desire's Magic Theatre
TesseracT - Polaris
iamthemorning - Lighthouse
I know I have some pretty weird taste-buds and that I tend to veer away from the pack, yet it surprises me that I struggle to find one album to root for in this little tournament. I've listened to all albums here bar Polaris and Coma Ecliptic and find little that touches me on an emotional level. Maybe I should just vote for Purson and be done with it....which is kinda funny seeing as I find it the least "prog" sounding album on offer

Just goes to show that 2016 has been a pretty poor year for RPI....nah hang on a minute, there are quite a few 2015 releases, so I guess they're cutting the year abnormally. So yeah no RPI, fusion, space rock, avant or any of the more boisterous genres, but that is probably to be expected.
Btw I voted for King Crimson in the live event. I foresee the gig in September being absolutely spectacular
Shame I couldn't vote for Fire! Orchestra...

I wonder how those awards can still be taken seriously. The first half of this year has seen a bumper crop of great albums, but as usual the Prog magazine crew ignore them in favour of rather run-of-the mill stuff. The only saving grace of this year's edition is the presence of Knifeworld and Bent Knee (and of course KC and Magma).

My thoughts (and tastes) exactly
I think most of the folks working for these types of magazines are lost in the DT/Spock's Beard/IQ/Marillion/Flower Kings/Magic Pie kind of prog. It'd be cool to see a more diverse spread of albums and artists to highlight that prog isn't something you can throw in a box with a sticker that says 'long guitar and moogg solos, mellotron and tricky time signatures'.
“The Guide says there is an art to flying or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.”
I am of course over-exaggerating a tad. Magma, Bent Knee, Knifeworld, Purson and Messenger all fall outside the classic prog sound. What I don't understand is that Say So and Bottled Out Of Eden aren't candidates for AOTY, but I guess that's pushing things a bit too far too fast.
I guess I'm one of those rare few who'd like to see the genre progress - though not at the expense of the music (some artists make incredibly progressive music....which in turn is nigh on unlistenable). It irks me to see the same old being put on a pedestal at the expense of so many new and exciting groups. Acts that are doing stuff to prog that even Squire would've smiled at.
In the end it's about popularity methinks....and the candidates listed are most likely Prog Magazine's most popular....but the question beckons: does Prog Magazine cover the newcomers to the "scene"? Are they aware of the new Italian and Norwegian bands? If not, then it is not at all strange that it's reader-base is equally unaware.

I think it's from this semester and the previous one.
Hawkwind are representing the whole Space Rock genre
I'd love to see them, I'm still hoping for a concert here to be announced.

So basically... it has become a silly political game just like the grammys? Oh, cool :)
