One of my personal favorites from 80's Genesis, what do you think is the best track from Shapes?

"That's All".

It was the very first track I ever heard from any version of the band. The catchy start to a long and fruitful journey.

Has it really been almost 33 years since I remember sitting in History class listening to this?

Thanks for reminding me to listen again, a nice little album.

"Home by the Sea" both parts

Home By the Sea had very stellar vocals. Perhaps the last by the Phil-lanthropist!

I don't know/have this album yet, but for live versions, I do love "Mama" and "Home by the Sea" (as a whole, not divided in two songs).

I like the whole thing, but, if push came to shove, the "Home By The Sea" sequence.

Home by the sea and second HBTS. It's one track as far as I'm concerned.

This album is a mixture of good highs and appalling lows. I find Illegal Alien offensive and completely un-funny. It could have been sung by Benny Hill.

Benny Hill

Mama, HBTS/SHBTS and Silver Rainbow are all good though. Three star album thanks to the good bits, although the band were well into their artistic decline at this point. Teetering on artistic oblivion in fact. There was far better pop around at the time.

Sad world when a Wiki link to Benny has to be posted.

I thought it would help if some folk outside the UK didn't know who he was. Simple as that. Not sure what point you're making.

2nd Home by the Sea just over Mama.

A 3-star album with some nice moments (and a bit of crap).

Home By The Sea 1 & 2, followed closely by Mama, then If It's Gonna Get Better (Banks' keyboards are tasteful - almost has that swirling Hammond T sound he loved).

The first side is consistently superb, up there with the best of their `poppier' material'. It's got a terrific pop song in `That's All', the proggier stuff is covered with the two-part `Home by The Sea', and the creepy `Mama' is almost - ALMOST! - industrial with those cold programmed synths!

But the second side is mostly totally throwaway.

`Mama' gets my vote, though. Very sinister atmosphere and a very dark lyric. Pretty amazing they still managed to turn those words into an accessible tune!

Less than stellar? Excuse you, Genesis is like a 9/10, at least.

I'm a big fan of this one, I can't help but get sentimental when hearing it.

Hmmm.....it only rated a 2.74 after 1031 votes. What's that equate on a 10 scale....about 4 or 5...?

Mama by far. The most intense song by Genesis. Home by the Sea is a ok pop track.
A GREAT YEAR FOR PROG!!!
