Topic: Few Croatian projects for Jazz-Rock/Fusion Posted: June 23 2016 at 13:17
I'm sorry I started one thread for a few artists, but I found it more decent than stalking with 5-6 topics with suggestions for artists from the same country, period of time and subgenre. If You want me to separate them, I'll do that.
Anyway, during the last 5 - 10, surprisingly large amount of great jazz artists with interesting ideas emerged in Croatia, and I think that some of their electric projects with some prog leanings deserve to be included on progarchives. The countdown starts with the bands that have the most prog elements in their sound, and are most likely to be included here.
1. CHUI
Chui is a nu-jazz/fusion project led by keyboardist Toni Starešinić, and currently consists of Starešinić, Janko Novoselić (drums) & Vojkan Jocić (saxophones, electronics). Their music is quite unique blend of grooves that are equally based on electronic dance music and Canterburyesque fusion (sometimes they remind me of "Seven"-era Soft Machine), jazz/fusion improvisation, jazz-rock themes, and ambient/psychedelic soundscapes. Chui has released three albums: "Chui" (2012), "Second Arrival" (2013), and "Third Sun from the Stone" (2015).
2. WAVEFORM
Waveform is a quartet from Split that was formed in 2007, and has released two albums: "Waveform" (2009), and "Dim Sum" (2013). They play energetic, and well arranged classic fusion. Members of the band are Miro Alduk (guitars), Ivan Božičević (keyboards), Jan Ivelić (drums), and Ante Jurinović (el. bass), who substituted Neno Miškec after the first album.
3. HOLOGRAM
Another intriguing fusion quartet comprised of HRT Big Band veteran Elvis Penava (guitar), session musician Kristian Terzić (keyboards), Goran Delač (bass guitar) and Marko Lazarić (drums). Hologram has released an eponymous album in 2011, and is currently on hiatus, because the players live in different cities (Zagreb, Pula), and are involved in other projects.
4. KOZMODRUM
Supergroup led by drummer/keyboardist/composer Janko Novoselić (Chui, etc.) that also includes Goran Delač (bass) and Elvis Penava (guitar) from Hologram as well as Ivan Kapec (guitar) and Hrvoje Galler (keyboards, only on stage) from Capisconne. They have released one album ("Na tragu satelita") in 2016 with compositions by Novoselić that blend contemporary jazz, electronic, prog, ambient and dub.
5. KRISTIAN TERZIĆ
Keyboardist from Pula that played in Hologram, and has some session work behind, has also released an interesting self-titled solo album in 2011.
6. CAPISCONNE
Capisconne (Capisconne Electro Unity) is contemporary jazz band led by guitar player Ivan Kapec, that currently consists of Kapec, piano player Hrvoje Galler, bassist Zvonimir Šestak and drummer Borko Rupena. Capisconne plays an interesting blend of contemporary jazz, ambient, minimalism and chill-out music in similar fashion as some ECM artists, with extraordinary Ivan Kapec blending styles of Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell. Capisconne has released two studio albums ("Razor", 2010, "Time Travelling", 2014), one EP ("Activity", 2009), and split album with Romanian ethno group Anton Pann Band ("Emerging Landscapes").
^We can leave it in the confines of this thread at this point, but in the future please do open separate bands in separate threads no matter how similar they are.
Thanks for assembling info about which artist has which albums and the youtube samples but it's a bit of a hassle to research all of this at once just from text, if you could link here something like their homepages and/or bandcamps/soundclouds for each if they have it, we would appreciate it, thanks.
And sorry for bombing You with so many artists at the same time, but unfortunately it seems like no one was suggesting and updating artists from my region after the break of Yugoslavia. And I personally think there are some people that deserve to be included on encyclopedic sites like this one.
Some of these are a bit too close to contemporary jazz and fusion for my liking, but I'll take Waveform, Kozmodrum and Chui to get checked by the team, thanks.
