I like Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, and the Lamb equally. To me, they are the band's seminal works, and which one I like best depends on the hour, day, and lunar phase.
A Tick of the Trail and Windy Weathering also are great, but I don't view them as foundational. After breaking Wind, the band never again rose to such great heights. Trespass certainly is foundational, but I have always felt that Nursery Cryme is where the band found its sea legs.

Best? In my opinion, I'd say Trick of the Tail or Self-titled. No, I'm not trolling, I've just never been able to get into the Gabriel albums.

My favourite really changes by day and mood. If i could have only one, today Trick of the Tail would be, but someone online did a track by track comparison with Wind & Wuthering coming out on top and it seemed to make lotsa sense.
I may lose all prog cred(do i have any :D) but i really enjoy listening Invisible Touch pardon the title song chorus. So some days, even that one.

I feel the same way. Although, Nursery Cryme has a slight edge.

Foxtrot or Trick of the Tail. Selling England by the Pound may have more highs, but there are some songs on that album I just can't stand.

Just to be different I'd say Seconds Out. The drums (on the non remaster) always sound superb and the performances sublime. I just wish it had been a 3 LP set. Same as Live should have been a 2 LP thing.
I'd go with Wind And Wuthering for favourite Genesis number (and the least favourite). But for studio masterpiece I'd pick The Lamb on Broadway.

Live by some distance; I love Second's Out, too, while I find some weak parts on all of their studio albums (besides great songs) that make me rate them all below "masterpiece" level, although some are quite good.

While I generally prefer the albums from Nursery...to Lamb, ...and Then There Were Three does something special to me every time I listen to it. Incredibly emotive album and Burning Rope is my alltime Genesis favorite.

we made a "Nursery Cryme" special edition which includes the singles "Happy the Man" and "Twilight Alehouse". that special edition is about the same length as "Foxtrot", "Selling England by the Pound", "A Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering"

Just like me. I can't explain about it with words (because of my English maybe!) . One kind of sorrow or depressive atmosphere , I don't know. Very impressive for me. This post push me to go to listen to it after 6-7 months. Thanks a lot.
