Either you're so alien to hip hop as a listener that you don't appreciate the subtleties of rapping, or hip hop just isn't the right form of music for you.

This is actually 'Progressive Rap' (I'm not joking):

"Cómo Asesinar a Felipes" or just "C.A.F." is a Chilean Progressive Rap band. Tongue

Or he's talking about modern rap, which most does sound the same. The good old classic rap had a lot more variety.

I think all of those are accurate. Most rap I've heard is modern, so I don't really like that and I completely believe that older rap is better than new rap, but I don't really care for it in the first place. Prog beats rap 5 trillion to 1.

Still wrong.

Not even scratching the surface. The sub-genres of trap and cloud rap can tend to get same-y but there are still outliers.

What Poly said
In fact I'd bet there's much more diversity in rapping these days than 20~ years ago because of the increased variety of subgenres and styles that have emerged since then and abundance of different artists releasing stuff on the internet.

The long track Compression by Moongarden:
It begins like a neo-progressive rock song, then it becomes a rap/techno/rock thing, and it ends with a King Crimson riff. Wonderful !!!

French rap is often intelligent and sometimes even slightly proggy

Grand Corps Malade (he's for life on crutches) is one of most striking example

Another French rap band, called Manau (these guys went #1)...
This is more axed towards kids, but some of it was really positive

I tend to see rap as "entertainment" and not "music". That's because I'm a musician. I don't hear any musical worth in it at all. Of course, this is just personal opinion, yours may vary.

As I have said before, rapping is just a particular vocal technique which IMHO has legitimate uses even in prog. Yet, some rappers rap just because they can't sing in tune, and most hip-hop is of little musical value.

Not proggish, but perhaps of interest, is Steve Lehman's new project combining avant jazz with hip hop:

It's not going to replace his Octet in my affections any time soon, but worth a listen.
