This poll is intended as a corollary to zravkapt's A Poll With 3 Options which pits Magma (the Zeuhl one primarily I believe) against Renaissance and Dream Theater.
In this case I have pitted the longest song off of each of the debut albums of those three bands. None of these debuts for each band are as popular as certain later releases, but I count these as my particular favourite albums of each band, although Kobaļa is the only one of these albums I truly love. I know this really goes without saying, but please do not vote without knowing all three song options, and vote for the studio album version (if others are available). For those that don't yet know them all, or need to have memories jogged, here are the tracks off youtube. I have listed the tracks in order of my preference. |

Nau Ektila is an absolutely fantastic track! One of my favorites in all of prog.
Renaissance debut is very nice and so is Bullet. I'm not gonna pretend I'll bother checking out what lies hidden behind that armpit.

They're both pretty fabulous, Pierre. Love them too. And I like that they are so comparable in various ways.
The Dream Theater one is the odd man out, and to be honest, if I weren't making this as a poll as a corollary to Zravkapt's, it wouldn't have been one of my choices. And had I not decided to choose longest tracks, then I would have gone with Ytse Jam, which I feel starts with something of a an homage to Spinal Tap Rock 'n' Roll Creation that is pretty cool. Still, the start of The Killing Hand is comparable to how Nau Ektila begins. I would prefer the Killing Hand if they returned more to that style and theme and developed it more as it feels rather tacked on to me rather than both thematically and stylistically integral to it, but hey, it's going for a different audience. |

Interesting poll.
I'm familiar with both the Magma and Renaissance tracks. I think I've only heard "Ytse Jam" from DT's debut. I voted for Magma but I listened to all three as it's been awhile since I heard the first two. Nau Ektila - One of the rare occasions where you get acoustic guitars in a Magma track. I prefer mid-70s Magma over early Magma but that was always one of my faves from the debut. Bullet - One of the best tracks from my fave Renaissance album. Much prefer early Ren to later Ren. The Killing Hand - Not too bad. I prefer their original vocalist to LaBrie. This is better than most of the songs on the next album IMO. This sounds very 'late 80s' the same way the Renaissance track sounds very 'late 60s'.

Surely not DT. I can't choose between the other two.

The first Renaissance album is wonderful, and the two Illusion albums released by the reformed Renaissance mark1 also contain some lovely music. So Bullet for me.

Naü Ektila. The other two are also good, although Keith Relf's vocals in the first four minutes of Bullet have the power to make the whole band sound out of tune.
