Topic: Argent vs Kansas vs Camel Posted: August 18 2016 at 16:51 |
Love Camel but Kansas had a better run with those first six albums.

Without explanation, reason, or even logic : CAMEL .........KANSAS ..................ARGENT
All three are great bands, I have quite a few albums of each (mostly Camel - 10 LP's) so, stands to reason......

Camel Camel was a late discovery for me but I caught up fast. Kansas (Leftoverture) I've admired from it's inception - but Kansas is so dichotomously hot/cold their controversy is deserved. Finally, I've always thought Argent is/was highly overrated - but I admit to being familiar with only their 'commercial' output so my knowledge is too thin for a reliable opinion ...

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

An old poll asking: What is your favorite Symphonic band? has my favorite Kansas-related moment in music or otherwise:

Next to Missouri. |
My vote goes to the obvious choice, but I also like Argent quite a bit.

I gotta believe most Americans including the U.S. and a lot of Latin and South America would prefer Kansas. The older and more familiar I get with Prog music around the world the more I understand why Europeans and others don't take Kansas all that seriously, but there is a quality to their music and lyrics that speaks to the wide open expanse that is the Western Hemisphere, and the history that brought us to where we are today. While I can appreciate stuff like early Genesis and Camel and VdGG and the like, that music doesn't capture the western spirit anywhere close to what Kansas does so it will never rate as soulful and dear, at least for me.
And IMHO Argent was a good band but doesn't belong in the same conversation as Kansas or Camel.

I can't vote in the poll, but easily Kansas for me. Especially 70s Kansas is easily upper-tier in my opinion.
Re Argent, I like what I've heard fairly well, though I've not heard at least half of their output. I need to explore them more.
Re Camel, I've heard even less of their work, but in their case, that's because what I've heard hasn't clicked very well with me.

Camel gets my vote, their first four albums can compete with the big wigs of progressive rock. However, I will admit I haven't listened to any Argent, so I'll try and check them out this weekend.

110% agree. Camel is, for me, the best band ever. But Argent are excellent and this is the first time i've ever seen them mentioned on here. Kansas? Well they're not bad.
