Now this is one I'm pretty sure hasn't been suggested before- either that or the search function is lying to me.

Dave Matthews Band is one of the more interesting bands I've started listening to as of late. They are considered part of the 'jam band' genre, alongside bands like Phish and Umphrey's McGee, and their eclectic music has led to intricate experimentation on stage. Example:



There are many lengthy compositions (particularly in the 90's) that feature varied sounds, excellent musicianship, and story-telling lyrics. Much of their more complex music is a unique blend of jazz and rock that many bands have yet to do as well as DMB has. Here's some of the more notable examples:








It also may be notable that Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds of the band have performed in a group Dave Matthews & Friends, which included guitarist and vocalist of Phish, Trey Anastasio. 

I should mention that what I believe to be the band's most progressive album, Before These Crowded Streets (1998), is one that I believe requires you to listen to the whole album to truly grasp how varied it is. The decision is up to you.

Grateful Dead don't even have an entry on progarchives, so there's basically zero hope for DMB.

Well you quote DMB as a jam band with similarities to Phish & Umphreys Mcgee. Both those bands are heavily influenced by the Grateful Dead who are probably the greatest experimental jam band of all time.

But Umphrey's and Phish both have pages on PA, and I think using Grateful Dead's absence as a reason against DMB's addition is unreasonable to say the least.. Not to mention DMB and Grateful Dead are drastically different even if they are influenced by GD, just like Phish and Umphrey's are. Their different styles were the reasons Phish and Umphrey's have a page on PA and GD don't, and that's because they are both more progressive in their own way. Same in my opinion goes for Dave Matthews.

^Yeah ok, they were noticed. But since this is a serious part of the forum where we either take suggestions for evaluations or discard them, I can't allow indefinite bumps for something that will go nowhere.

The proportion of songs by DMB that could be even considered related to prog rock (released songs, not occasional experimentation on stage) is just not enough for us to take it seriously as a progressive rock band under any stretch of imagination. I don't know if any future release of theirs will change everyone's opinion, but for now and this instance this thread is closed.
