I'm sorry if such a poll existed some time ago... I'd say my favorite is Tony Banks, especially his debut "A Curious Feeling". Despite the fact that he pehaps moved the least from his mother band's signature sound, he always came out with well crafted and performed songs. Peter Gabriel and Anthony Phillips share the second position for me, both released plenty of great stuff, but the first one sometimes led his intricate artistic ideas in too "distanced eighties" direction for my taste, and the second one sometimes got lost in acoustic guitar noodling, particularly in his "Private Parts and Pieces" series. Phil Collins' and Mike and the Mechanics' poppier direction is hit and miss for me, while Mike Rutherford did have a decent solo album "Smallscreep's Day" prior to that. Also, I suspect that after the great "Voyage of the Acolyte" Steve Hackett didn't really have the idea which way to go, and most of his albums sound to me either directionless, headed in too many directions or in one direction he clearly isn't at home with (blues, straight-ahead rock, latin pop).

All are good, but I went with Hackett followed by Gabriel and Collins. Much better solo stuff here than in the Yes camp...by far.

Peter Gabriel for me. He's released so many great albums.
Some of Phil Collins songs are great too. And I love his drumming on Robert Plant's The Principle Of Moments.

Steve Hackett I like Peter Gabriel's works as well.
I love Tony Banks' debut album. Brand X is great, love Phil's drumming. As for his solo career, I've listened and liked four of his albums. Mike's first solo effort was great. I like some Mike & the Mechanics songs as well.
I definitely need to listen to some more Ant Philips.

Ant just ahead of Hackett, followed then by Gabriel. As to the rest, I would say Banks, Rutherford, Collins. I enjoy all of them as solo artists, some more than others obviously. Phil is the least consistent for me.

Mr. Hackett, just a hair ahead of Mr. Gabriel, followed by Mr. Phillips.

^ Mr. Gabriel, just a hair ahead of Mr. Hackett, followed by Mr. Phillips. Very small difference between our opinions!
