Ok, so in a week from tomorrow I will be visiting the Emerald Isle! But no one ever talks about prog in Ireland. Are there any good Irish prog bands I can listen to? If not, I plan to listen to mostly folk bands like Jethro Tull and Focus

If you're looking for 70s-era folky stuff you should check out Horslips, Mellow Candle and Mushroom. There are a few more recent bands in the Post/Math vein like God Is An Astronaut, And So I Watch You From Afar and Adebisi Shank.

Also: Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher. Not prog, but if you're going to Ireland and not worship this two... you're doing it wrong.

Not mentioned folky stuff, I'd recommend Clannad and Moving Hearts.

Mentioned already, But I do like Mellow Candle's Swaddling Songs and Mushroom very much.

I loved my trip to Ireland; enjoy.

as already mentioned, definitely Clannad, Moving Hearts, Horslips and Fruupp.
I'm just listening to Mushroom now for the first time

Ireland is more folk than prog, I think.

Recommendations: Horslips (The Book of Invasions is their best), Clannad.

Outside the realm of prog: Planxty, The Bothy Band, Sweeney's Men.

The High Kings, The Irish Descendants, The Chieftains, Sinéad O'Connor, Clannad. Pretty much the more Irish folk you can get your hands on the better, I used to listen to that stuff constantly.

not prog but check out The Men they Couldn't Hang", particularly "Waiting for Bonaparte" and "Silvertown".  This is one band that should have made it at least as big as the Pogues (who were originally going to be called The Men They Couldn't Hang).  Socially conscious, harmonious and rocking

Here are a few samples:






and OYSTERBAND, a band that isn't Irish but could easily be.  Due to their vocalist and their somewhat proggy tendencies, particularly in the late 1990s, they could have been confused for a Celtic Moody Blues
Another one that could have hit it big for similar reasons.  I'm not sure about The Men They Couldn't Hang, but Oysterband, in a live setting, may have relied too much on extended jigs, which keep the folk fans happy but kind of turned off rock fans like me (who love their folk mostly in a rock setting)

you are correct.  I thought that TMTCH was also considered but determined to be not in your face enough.  I can't seem to find a reliable reference for that though Embarrassed
